Itinerary

Days 1-2 Stockholm sets the stage for this remarkable journey on the Baltic Sea | Travel the magnificent Stockholm archipelago by bike, water taxi and ferry | Cycle from island to island past Swedish summer homes and charming villages | Enjoy plush amenities and Backroads camaraderie as our ship takes to the open sea | Partake in yoga or just sit back and enjoy the sea breeze.

Day 3 Our first port of call is Finland's harborside capital, an eclectic city built atop an archipelago of over 300 islands | Treelined bike paths lead away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Helsinki to the Finnish coast | Our ship departs for Russia, arriving into St. Petersburg as the picturesque city awakens.

Days 4-6 Thanks to two centuries as an imperial capital, St. Petersburg is a treasure trove of history, art and cultural relics | Discover the city's grand avenues and intriguing side streets by bicycle, then make your way through world-class museums, palaces and galleries on foot | Pedal through the countryside around Pavlovsk, pausing in Pushkin to marvel at Catherine the Great's magnificent summer palace | While exploring St. Petersburg's canals and waterways by kayak, you'll understand how the city earned its moniker, “Venice of the North.”

Days 7-8 A stop in UNESCO-designated Tallinn, Estonia, is your chance to visit one of Europe's best-preserved medieval cities | A scenic spin along the Baltic coast takes you through lovely woodland and returns you to Tallinn's historic center via the sandy beaches of the Pirita Riviera | The Swedish island of Gotland is renowned as a biker's paradise—from the port in Visby, a delightful cycling route follows winding coastal roads through rural farmland and quaint villages.

Day 9 An afternoon in Gdańsk offers a glimpse of one of Poland's most unique cities | Ride through Pomerania's bucolic landscape, dotted with farms, woodland and colorful arcaded country homes | Gain insight into the city's complex World War II history and the integral role it played in Europe's Solidarity movement.

Days 10-11 Our ship pulls up anchor and sets sail for Denmark and cosmopolitan Copenhagen, a perfect place to extend your stay.

Get the Straight Talk about This Trip

We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

Accommodations & Group Size

The ships we sail on are your floating luxury hotel for the entire trip, letting you visit a new city or country each day without having to unpack and pack up your bags! These 100- to 250-passenger ships are exclusive by ocean standards and are custom‐designed with a variety of inviting common spaces so you'll have plenty of room for both relaxing and socializing.Due to the unique nature of our active Ocean Cruise trips, we welcome more guests on each departure than on our land-based trips, which are limited to 20 guests for Walking & Hiking and 26 guests for Biking and Multi-Adventure trips. This allows us to create our own robust active community with that special Backroads camaraderie during our week-long journey. Sometimes walkers and bikers—and occasionally families—will travel aboard the same ship, but participate in separate activities with their own dedicated leaders. With our usual choice of fantastic route options each day, rest assured that you'll have plenty of like-minded travelers with whom to ride, hike or enjoy cultural interests. Our unique logistics model—which includes both onboard and onshore Backroads staff, plus additional leaders and vans—allows for meals and shore activities to be organized into smaller groups, ensuring the same unparalleled support and service as on any other Backroads trip.

Itinerary

Our daily itinerary is subject to scheduled sailing times and as a result some days have limited or no access to shore. Our time spent on land will be optimized and filled with active pursuits, but be prepared for full days at sea with decreased physical activity.

Stateroom Categories

In contrast to our usual land-based trips, which have similar room categories, the Ponant ships offer a wide range of stateroom categories. The top-tier staterooms often fill fast so book as early as possible if this is important to you.

Local Bikes & Support in Russia

Due to government regulations, a local cycling company in St. Petersburg supplies us with bikes and route support for our rides in Russia. Your Trip Leaders will accompany you on the routes but Backroads vans and bikes are not permitted to enter Russia. Rest assured, these quality bikes are ideal for urban maneuverability and you'll find the same high level of support along our routes.
