This chart is intended as a general guide. Terrain varies by region, and factors like temperature can affect overall effort. Please review your trip’s Route & Terrain Notes for details specific to your itinerary.
🚲 If you choose an e-bike, keep in mind that while distances and elevation remain the same, pedal-assist can significantly reduce effort—making hills easier, miles smoother and longer routes more accessible.

FAQs
- Do you accommodate avid cyclists or hikers?
Absolutely! We’re a company of avid cyclists and hikers, so we know the joy of a long ride or a challenging hike. Nearly all of our trips include Level 3 routes—typically three to five hours of activity, with 26–42 miles of biking or five to nine miles of hiking. Many itineraries also feature Level 4 and 5 routes, which can mean up to seven hours of activity, 70+ miles on the bike or 13+ miles on the trail.
And if you’re eager to go even farther, our Trip Leaders know the region inside and out and can often suggest extra options to stretch your adventure.
- Who are Unplugged Bike Trips for?
Unplugged Trips are designed for guests who want the classic cycling experience—no e-assist, just the rhythm of the road and the satisfaction of riding under your own power. These trips attract riders who love the camaraderie of tackling climbs together, savoring the quiet of the countryside and celebrating a well-earned meal after a good ride.
If you’re drawn to the idea of pedaling at your own pace, embracing the challenge and enjoying the pure simplicity of cycling, Unplugged Trips are a perfect fit.
- Will there be any e-bikes on Unplugged trips?
To preserve the spirit and camaraderie of pedal-only travel, Unplugged Trips are designed for traditional bikes. A very limited number of e-bikes may be available to enable a traveling companion to ride alongside a guest on an acoustic (non-electric) bike, but in general these trips are all about the joy of powering yourself.
- I am hesitant about slowing down the group or being able to finish the rides or hikes. Do you have trips for me?
Absolutely. Backroads trips are designed to welcome a wide range of abilities and paces. If you’d like a gentler experience, consider our Dolce Tempo Trips or look for itineraries rated Levels 1–3. They’re perfect if you’re new to active travel—or if you just prefer more time to take in the scenery.
On Biking Trips, you can also choose our custom-designed titanium electric-assist bike for an extra boost when you want it. And with our unmatched support—three to four leaders, multiple vans and flexible route options—you can always go at your own pace, hop in a van or call it a day when relaxation sounds better than another mile.
