We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
Our accommodations for this itinerary have been carefully chosen to bring you an authentic experience in the Dolomites. These renovated traditional Dolomite lodges are located deep in the mountains to provide service to hikers. While not as luxurious as other Backroads accommodations, these properties offer warm hospitality, charm and character in addition to modern comforts and amenities. If you request a double bed, please keep in mind that European double beds are often two twin beds adjacent to each other. On occasion, there is the potential to be assigned bunk beds. Single room availability is limited.
Our hikes through the region’s captivating terrain are often on trails that do not intersect with roads. Vehicles will sometimes get us to and from the trailheads, but the nature of these trails is such that we won’t see our vans along the route. Trail support in the form of water, snacks and encouragement is provided by your Backroads leaders.

Trip to Heaven
An incredible adventure, once again, expertly curated by Backroads. The trip leaders were exceptional in their knowledge of the area and the terrain and were just plain great people. We were looking for a challenge and this trip did not disappoint. Can't wait for the next one!

Great views, travelers, and Dolomite hiking for the win!
An incredible experience that lives up to the BR standards. The so called "casual" hotels were amazing with wonderful balconies, views and dining. John and Sarah were our primary guides, with Holly and Marguerite joining on a couple days each. They connected with all of us and had plenty of Dolomite fun facts related to geography, geology, history, and culture. An early snow, a few days before our trip (Sept 15 - 20), only added to the incredible scenery. The level 3-5 lived up to its billing on days 3 and 4, as each of our hikes had technical aspects. Despite some snowy patches and occasionally rugged terrain, all of our group (mostly ages 50's to 70's) made it without any issues, thanks to our guides. So advice for those considering this trip: Bring layers, as the mountains make their own weather. You will have hot and sunny, followed by cloudy and brisk winds, all on the same hike! You only need one pair of boots or trail runners, as each "hut" has a boot warming room. Bolzano is worth an extra day on either end. (Many in our group went to Iceman museum). We extended our trip in Bologna, while others went on to Venice, Florence, Rome, as well as Germany and Austria. A great BR trip that lends itself to extensions to some great European cities.

Dolomites heaven!
Our Backroads trip was incredible in every way and we look forward to joining another Backroads trip in the future. We never had to worry about a single thing except getting to the starting point and having a train ticket from Bolzano at the end of the trip. Each and every detail had been thought of and our bags were transported between accommodations which was so nice to find after a long day of hiking Combination of amazing scenery, delightful and energetic guides Eleanora and Emily and great support staff, and much, much nicer accomodations than expected since we chose the hut-2-hut rather than premier accommodations. We were also fortunate enough to have 16 other wonderful folks along for the advantage and everyone really mixed and mingled. No winers in this crowd!

The hikes and views on this trip were exceptional!
We've done both Casual Inns and Premier Lodging, but don't let the Hut to Hut Lodging scare you away from this trip and itinerary. This is a breath taking experience which takes you into the heart of the Dolomites. The huts are charming and comfortable providing an authentic experience. No tourist here. Experience backpacking like a local with the luxury of having Backroad's support. Truly grateful for this experience!

Exhilarating and Gorgeous
My friend and I went together as our 50th birthday presents to ourselves. We had a wonderful group of fellow travelers and two amazing and knowledgeable trip leaders, Petra and Veronica. Every hike and trail was better than the last. We challenged ourselves during the day hiking among the postcard-perfect scenery and came back to a fantastic meal every evening.
Exhilarating, challenging, exciting and everything else
Loved every minute of this trip. The guides Camilla and David's were wonderful, the huts were the right amount of comfort and authentic, the food was abundant and special, the people were so friendly and equally up for the challenge. In fact I felt pushed in a good way!
Addicted to Backroads
We just completed our 3rd backroads family trip. My husband and I are in our early 60s, our kids are aged 26-34. They are already asking ''where next''. We love that it is an active, worry free and flexible vacation for all. We don't need to cling to each other --yet there is plenty of time for quality togetherness. I highly recommend this style for active families who live far apart yet still enjoy time as unit. The bonding is priceless. Vacation locations are exceptional.

Backroads delivered the Dolomites on a silver platter!
We had high hopes and high expectations for the hut-to-hut Dolomites trip after our spectacular first Backroads trip to the Norway fjords last year. I'm happy to report that the Dolomites measured up! We enjoyed incredible scenery, invigorating hikes, delicious Tyrolean food, and comfortable lodges. Plus, Kalea and Aitor were charming and energetic as leaders; they took care of all the logistics so we could focus on hiking, relaxing, and making new friends with our fellow hikers.

Outstanding hiking trip in Dolomites with great trip
This trip was really flawless. Every detail was planned and made it very enjoyable to just enjoy the hikes and make new friends.

Stunning Dolomites: Ideal for Hiking and Strudel
This was my first Backroads trip, and it was a big hit. My friend and I are active hikers, and we were looking for lots of hiking and time in the mountains. This trip delivered, together with great food, stunning vistas and good company of like-minded travellers. We were a group of 11, plus guides, which was an ideal size for everyone to gel and mingle during the trip. The hiking was challenging at times, and we were regularly restored with strudel, coffee, and the occasional soak in cool mountain springs. It was almost a perfect trip.
