FAQs

How many hours of activity can I expect each day?

That’s the beauty of Backroads—you get to decide. With multiple route options, support vans and Trip Leaders, every day is flexible. Most guests spend about three to five hours on the bike or trail, but you can adjust up or down depending on how much activity feels right for you.

Here’s a general guide to activity time by level:

  • Level 1: 2–3 hours
  • Level 2: 2–4 hours
  • Level 3: 3–5 hours
  • Level 4: 4–6 hours
  • Level 5: 5–7+ hours

For more details—including mileage and elevation gain—see our Activity Chart.

How do Backroads Trip Leaders support the biking and/or hiking routes?

Our Trip Leaders are there every step of the way to make sure you feel supported and free to enjoy the journey. On biking routes, one leader drives a support van—circulating along the route to offer lifts, snacks or assistance—while another rides the route, checking in with cyclists at different paces. On hiking routes, leaders typically split up: one sets the pace at the front while another supports guests who prefer to take it easy.

The level of van support can vary by trip size and location, but you’ll always have options to adjust your day. And for activities like kayaking or rafting, our leaders often partner with expert local guides to provide extra instruction and safety.

What will the terrain be like on my trip?

You’ll find detailed descriptions of each day’s route options—including Activity Level, distance and elevation gain—on the trip’s web page and in your Travel Planner. These resources give you a sense of whether you’ll be pedaling along rolling country roads, hiking up gradual inclines or tackling steeper mountain passes.

Keep in mind that most Backroads trips include multiple route choices each day, so you can decide what feels right for you. Our leaders are also there to provide tips, encouragement and adjustments along the way. Whether you prefer a more leisurely pace or want to challenge yourself, you’ll have options designed to match your comfort and ability level.
