Itinerary

Day 1 Welcome to Portugal! Meet in Porto, a World Heritage city with a colorful 1,400-year-old history  Journey to Vitorino dos Piães and hike on a section of the Caminho Português (Portuguese Way)  Relish a sumptuous lunch of regional favorites at a traditional quinta (farm).

Day 2 Venture though eucalyptus and pine woodland in the beautiful Labruja Mountains  Green rolling hills, forests and rural villages with baroque-style churches provide a tranquil backdrop en route to Rubiães  Taste full-bodied Portuguese wines—like sparkling vinho verde—in our hotel's private cellar.

Day 3 Hike to the top of Monte Santa Tecla for views of the ocean and the pewter-hued Minho estuary  Travel to Spain and walk to circular castros, remains of an ancient settlement built by Galicia's Celtic invaders  In atmospheric A Guarda, try the local zamburiñas (scallops)  Walk along a section of the Coastal Camino, savoring panoramic vistas of the rugged coastline as you make your way to the stunning Oia Monastery  On a stroll this evening, soak up the charm of Baiona's fishing port and historic quarter.

Day 4 Journey by private boat along the shoreline with a local guide and discover the area's history and secrets  Explore Cíes Islands Nature Reserve, one of Spain's most spectacular national parks  Relax on white-sand beaches or walk across pristine Monteagudo Island  Settle into luxury at a Relais & Chateâux property in Santiago de Compostela.

Days 5-6 Enjoy the lively pilgrimage atmosphere as you walk a section of the Camino Francés (French Way) en route to Santiago de Compostela  With a local guide, tour the old quarter of Santiago, lauded as one of Spain's most beautiful cities  Enter the magnificent baroque cathedral alongside hundreds of pilgrims—a memorable way to cap off your trip!  Head out on a scenic morning hike before we say goodbye.

Our family had a fantastic time on the Taste of the Camino trip. The scenery was gorgeous, accommodations and food excellent, and our tour guides outstanding. This was the best family trip we have taken in years. We absolutely love the flexibility provided by Backroads while still guaranteeing a fun, delightful experience for all.

Walking the Camino

Although we'll be walking along parts of the Camino de Santiago, it's important to note that our experience will be quite different from that of its Compostela-seeking pilgrims, who are required to walk at minimum the last 100 kilometers into Santiago—often along stretches of busy highway—and who typically stay in simple dormitories. This trip allows us to experience the essence and highlights of the Camino and surrounding landscape in comfort, with the region's best hotels, gourmet meals and excellent route support each day.

Why Travel with Backroads in Camino de Santiago

More Leaders to Support You

On our Camino de Santiago trips we have an extra leader supporting you along the trail—for a total of three, compared to the industry standard two. So we can be in more places at once, giving personal attention to guests traveling at their own pace. Here's more on our Trip Leaders.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Camino de Santiago trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

Experts with Secrets to Share

In choosing the ideal experts to enrich your travel experience, we look for people with a wealth of local knowledge, but also the ability to convey their insights in English. Too often travelers find themselves smiling politely, not quite understanding what they're being told. Our experts share intriguing facts, anecdotes and inside stories that stay with you forever.

Choose Your Fellow Travelers

With Backroads you won't end up with kids on what you thought was an adult trip; we have exclusive departures for families, so they're off having their own adventures. As you browse our unrivaled selection of trips and dates, you can count on finding a trip in Camino de Santiago that's geared exclusively to your choice of traveling companions.

Only the Best Hotels

On this Premiere Inn trip, you can count on the best lodgings Camino de Santiago has to offer. In fact, the hotels we've chosen in this region have higher retail room rates than those offered by any other active travel company—even when their trips cost more.

The Right Local Pairings

Our Trip Leaders combine deep local expertise with a firm grasp of North American expectations around quality of service. By the same token, we pair experienced Backroads leaders with local guides who know how to cater to your needs while cracking open the culture or natural history in ways that are meaningful, memorable and often magical.

Signature Backroads Picnics

Guests rave about our picnic spreads. Enjoy a welcome break in a scenic spot, or a quick refuel stop if you don't want to lose momentum. And because we have two vans, one can host lunch while the other is out providing support along the route.

In Europe Since 1988

Backroads has been welcoming active travelers to Europe since before the Berlin Wall came down. Today it's virtually our second home. We know the perfect roads and trails, the most scenic valleys and hilltop towns, the hidden churches and gem-like museums, the up-and-coming vintners and celebrated chefs—and, of course, all the best places to stay.

Quality You Can Measure

Since 1979, Backroads Founder and President Tom Hale has shown that staying #1 means constantly evaluating our performance using the best possible source of information: our guests. As we systematically analyze your feedback on our trip consultants, leaders, hotels, meals and on-trip activities, we never stop working to make a great company even better.
