- Coast through a high canopy of fragrant pines on a zip-line adventure through protected forestlands

We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
The Canaries are Europe's premiere winter sun destination. Nevertheless, with their drastic fluctuations in elevation, the islands are known for wildly variable microclimates. To ride quieter roads and experience sensational views, we venture inland and upward to where temperatures may be colder. Please be sure to bring warm layers and waterproof gear for those days that have both cool mountain air and warm coastal breezes.
Expect rolling to moderately hilly terrain on both hiking and biking routes. Trails wind through laurel forests, ancient volcanic craters and coastal paths on packed dirt and volcanic rock. Biking follows paved, hilly roads through villages and farmland, with shuttles to higher elevations for long descents. For kids, shuttles also provide hilltop starts for downhill routes and bypass town traffic. Families should be comfortable with shuttle-assisted outings.
This trip includes travel on a commercial flight (on Day 3) so that we can explore the best of your destination. Please note that flight schedules can change with little advance warning, which may require us to adjust our activities on a travel day. Your Trip Leaders will provide more details on any changes should this occur.
Please Note: The baggage allowance for our on-trip flight is 66 lbs of checked luggage and 17 lbs of hand luggage per person. If you exceed this limit, additional luggage or weight may be accepted at the airport, subject to availability and aircraft capacity.
This trip includes travel on a commercial ferry (on Day 6) as we return to Tenerife. Please note that ferry schedules can change and weather may hinder travel with little advance warning. Your Trip Leaders will provide more details on any changes should this occur, but we recommend flying off Tenerife the day after our arrival to avoid any delays to your outbound flight.
