We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
On many nights, the gourmet restaurants where we dine offer specially prepared, limited or fixed menus featuring a delicious selection of authentic regional cuisine.
In Basque Country, you can look forward to some exciting terrain on our hikes. If you want additional support, we have Leki trekking poles available in addition to water, snacks and ample encouragement provided by your Backroads leaders and local guides. We can also flatten some of the hills with strategic shuttles, but you should be comfortable with steep climbs and descents or hopping in the van for a lift.
While we always aim to get off the beaten path, this region is a popular coastal vacation spot for European tourists. You’ll be among locals and fellow travelers when we visit towns, and there can be moderate car traffic on some of the country roads we traverse (cars in this area are very respectful).

Outstanding guides and well-curated trip.
Good to be cared for and challenged to experience new vistas and cultures.

Amazing scenery, unique culture and exceptional hotels
Out of 8 trips with BR, this tied with Croatia for most beautiful scenery. Learning a little about the Basque culture and long historical impact was a bonus. And the hotels were over the top with luxury and atmosphere.
We thoroughly enjoyed this outstanding trip
We loved this trip. Basque Country is beautiful and the hikes allowed us to experience it from our starting point at Biarritz on the beautiful Bay of Biscay, to the hills and gorgeous vistas, to the charming small towns. The accommodations were also truly outstanding. To top it off, our guides significantly enhanced our experience. Sam (especially), Mario, Lucie and Bertrand were all knowledgeable and responsible but also fun, interesting and genuine people who the entire group bonded with. Just great people to hang out with. Our overall group was also wonderful and also bonded quickly. The only mild disappointment was the food. It was fine but in our opinion not up to the standards of other Backroads trips we've done. But we're picky. Overall this was a wonderful trip and we highly recommend it. We're looking forward to our next Backroads adventure (they have all been great).
Perfect in every way!
I'm still living this beautiful trip weeks later! Everything was absolutely perfect, from the planned (yet still flexible) walks and hikes into beautiful landscapes, to the fantastic accommodations and food, and especially our amazing leaders who made us feel ours was the only trip they will ever do. They were not just knowledgeable, but ever-helpful, thoughtful and so fun! As the only single person in our group of couples, I never felt left out, and in fact by the trip's end it seemed that we were all one easy family. Backroads, I'm exploring my next adventure with you!
First Backroads trip...of many!!!

Loved the extras -- musicians, pelotte playing, winery tours, loved Etienne and Lucille, unflappable, joyful, interesting and great company. So happy that I got to see this area of the world in this way; have signed up for the Galapagos trip, would also like to do Dolomites sometime.
This was a fabulous trip!

I can't say enough good things about our guides (Lizette, Etienne, and Tyler) and all that they did to make everything run smoothly. The accommodations were lovely, the scenery was gorgeous, the hiking was challenging enough, the cultural experience was appreciated, and the weather was perfect. We have done many guided biking trips with other companies, but this was our first hiking trip and I was sold on what Backroads delivered. It was first class from beginning to end.
Would do this trip again!

A thoroughly wonderful trip which we highly recommend! This Backroads adventure exceeded our expectations in every way. The guides are very special people - friendly, warm, and extremely knowledgeable about the region. Such terrific hospitality! We particularly like the different options so if there is an afternoon we want to 'hang back' and explore a village or get a massage we can do so. We've been on three Backroads trips and we have since signed up for a fourth this summer. Next on our travel agenda - Salzburg to Munich. Can' wait! Rick and Julie Pullen
