French Polynesia's coral reefs face growing environmental challenges despite their pristine appearance. Through visits to Coral Gardeners, Backroads travelers see firsthand how reef restoration and community education are helping protect these vital ecosystems.
When people picture French Polynesia, they usually think of crystal clear lagoons, vibrant coral reefs and an endless spectrum of blues. It’s easy to assume these ecosystems are untouched. The reality is more complicated.
I have been leading Backroads trips in French Polynesia since 2023, when we launched our Tahiti Ocean Cruise Multi-Adventure Trip that sails through the Society Islands. I have been fortunate not only to explore this remarkable part of the world through my work, but also to experience it through the eyes of a childhood friend. Thanks to him, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in Polynesian culture alongside local friends and villagers and gain a deeper understanding of the ocean’s central role in their daily lives, traditions, and identity.
A New Perspective on Tahiti’s Reefs
Coral reefs around the world are under immense pressure from warming oceans, pollution and other human impacts. Even here in French Polynesia, one of the most beautiful and pristine places on Earth, these underwater ecosystems need our help.
That’s one of the reasons I’m so proud that every Backroads trip in Tahiti includes a visit to Coral Gardeners. For our guests, it’s often one of the most memorable experiences of the trip. It shifts the conversation from admiring the reef to understanding what’s being done to protect it.
Coral Gardeners began right here in French Polynesia with a simple but ambitious mission: restore coral reefs and inspire a global movement for ocean conservation. Today, their work stretches beyond Mo’orea to Fiji and Thailand, but their roots remain firmly planted in the local community.
Why Reef Restoration Matters
During our visit, guests meet members of the Coral Gardeners team, learn about the science behind coral restoration, and see firsthand how fragments of resilient coral are cultivated in underwater nurseries before being transplanted back onto damaged reefs. It’s remarkable work, but what I appreciate most is that restoration is only one piece of the story. Education is just as important.
Coral Gardeners spends as much time connecting people to the ocean as they do restoring it. They work with local schools, host community workshops and welcome visitors from around the world, helping everyone understand why healthy coral reefs matter not just for marine life but also for the people who call these islands home.
We want to create a movement where anyone can revive the ocean, starting with the people who rely on the reef most: the locals, the fishermen, the surfers. They’re the ones who know it best.

Healthy reefs protect coastlines, support fisheries, sustain biodiversity and make experiences like snorkeling, diving, paddling and swimming possible. They’re central to both daily life in French Polynesia and the active adventures our guests travel here to enjoy.
As someone who has spent years leading and supporting trips in Tahiti, I’ve watched guests leave Coral Gardeners with a completely different appreciation for what lies beneath the surface. They arrive excited to see colorful fish and coral. They leave understanding that these ecosystems are living, changing and worth protecting.
This year, Backroads deepened its support of this vital work. Our contribution through our Give Back Program will help Coral Gardeners continue to restore reefs as well as expand community education and outreach. It was a natural extension of the relationship we’ve built over the years.

Turning Travelers into Ocean Advocates
One of my favorite moments on every trip is watching guests step back onto the boat after visiting Coral Gardeners and see that they notice the reef with fresh eyes.
Meaningful travel goes beyond just showing us beautiful places; it helps us understand them. And when we understand these places, we become more invested in protecting them.
My hope is that every guest leaves Tahiti carrying unforgettable memories of its turquoise lagoons and vibrant marine life, along with a deeper understanding of Polynesian traditions and a greater appreciation for the many different ways of life that make our world so unique.
But I also hope they leave knowing that those landscapes don’t stay healthy by accident. They endure because passionate people are working every day to restore them.
