Hudson Valley: New York State's Best-Kept Cycling Secret

Growing up in Pennsylvania, my family made trips to New York state often. It was far enough that we felt like we were really getting away but just close enough for a quick weekend escape to cooler weather and a few days of hiking.

One location that we loved to visit was the idyllic Hudson Valley.

The Hudson Valley’s rolling hills, scenic rivers and charming small towns are a magnet for cyclists like me. The hills are perfect for getting a burn, you’re rewarded with well-earned views and of course, there’s a cruisy valley descent.

Here are my top four reasons to take a spin in the Hudson Valley:

Charming Villages & Towns

They’re the towns you imagine when you think of small town-America charm. They’ve got quiet, brick-paved sidewalks, well-preserved colonial architecture and boutique shops. Streets and squares are lined with cozy cafes, artist residencies and restaurants with local, farm-to-table eats. Rolling into one of these towns feels like a big warm hug. Three that embody the Hudson Valley’s quintessential village charm of the Hudson Valley include Rhinebeck, Wassaic and Copake Falls.

World-Class Landscapes

Home to its namesake, the Hudson River, as well as the Berkshire Mountain range, the Hudson Valley features some of the best natural landscapes in New England. As you bike through the Valley, you’ll have views of the Catskills and the many quiet streams branching off of the Hudson. From forests and farmland to the waterfalls and gorges the valley is known for, the picturesque scenery is a dream to explore on two wheels.

Exceptional Cuisine

As any cyclist knows, when you finish your ride, you need to refuel. And you’re in luck since Hudson Valley fare is premium fuel. Farm-to-table is a way of life here, and the region prides itself on its local foods. Two of my favorite spots:

  • Millbrook Vineyards: With over 35 years of producing beloved wine, Millbrook Vineyards is an essential stop for wine enthusiasts visiting Hudson Valley. Enjoy a tasting overlooking the Catskills.
  • The Dining Room at Troutbeck: The main restaurant at this historic manor boasts a changing monthly menu designed around seasonal foods from farms in nearby Millbrook, Millerton, and Hudson. Don’t miss out on this first-rate when you’re in the area.

A Vibrant Cycling Community

As cyclists, we all know how it can feel to ride in places that aren’t bike-friendly: aggressive drivers, low quality roads and no shoulders to ride on. One of the best things about the Hudson Valley is its thriving and growing cycling community, which hosts numerous rides, events and tours from April to October.

In addition, the Hudson Valley’s Harlem Valley Rail Trail Association opened the first stretch of the Harlem Valley Rail Trail in 1996, with the goal of eventually creating a 46-mile trail connecting Wassaic to Chatham. The trail is currently 26 miles long with new segments being added every 5–10 years.
