New! Croatia Family Walking & Hiking Tour – Older Teens & 20s

Croatia's Dalmatian Coast Odyssey—Dubrovnik to Split

  • Explore the newly reborn Dalmatian Coast, gaining insight into Croatia's captivating history and distinctive culture
  • Island-hop and swim in the sun-drenched Adriatic, including the secluded swimming oasis of Stracincica Bay
  • Discover Dubrovnik, an architectural masterpiece with an impressive 82-foot-high fortified wall
  • Hike amid olive groves, undulating fields and dramatic cliffs with jaw-dropping sea views

It's usually a choice. Do you choose a destination with history, culture and natural beauty or do you go for sun, sea and a laid-back island atmosphere? Here it's both—the ideal blend of "enlightenment" and relaxation. When you come to the Dalmatian Coast, get set to enjoy two of the best vacations you've ever had.

Dalmatian Coast Croatia Map

Day 1 Get to know Dubrovnik, a fortified city with old-world architecture and rich traditions | A path along rolling hills seduces with stunning views—ocean on one side, mountains on the other | Join the Brautovic family in their tiny village for a home-cooked meal from their garden—even the bread and wine are homemade.

Days 2-3 Hike along the Pelješac Peninsula, passing hamlets and vineyards | Stroll in Korčula Town, one of Eastern Europe's best-preserved medieval centers | Trek to a remote swimming spot hidden in Stracincica Bay | Sunny Hvar, here we come! During our sail, you may be inspired to jump in.

Day 4 Walk along a coastal path amid jagged cliffs with sapphire sea views | In the romantic fishing village of Milna, savor garden-grown vegetables at a local home | Care for some lively nightlife? Hit the town in chic and popular Hvar.

Day 5 Boat to quiet Brač Island, known since ancient times for its milky-white marble | Hike through pine forest and past secluded bays to Blaca Hermitage, a captivating 16th-century monastery | Fuel up with lamb, fresh salad and dried figs served by a local shepherd | Sail to the bustling port city of Split.

Day 6 Explore Diocletian's Palace, a massive 4th-century complex and Split's living heart | Enjoy a guided walk through this World Heritage site.

Two Leaders

We ordinarily staff our trips with three leaders: two leaders out on the trail offering support—allowing everyone to have the experience they want, whether it's an easygoing interpretative walk or a rigorous hike—while the third leader moves the van from trailhead to trail end. This trip is a little different in that our routes are a combination of loop hikes and out-and-back trails that begin and end in the same location. This means that you'll still have the same two leaders providing excellent trail support without the need for a third leader to move the van.

Note: The Dalmatian Coast's landscape is characterized by constant rises and valleys, and the continuously rolling terrain (as well as summertime heat) can make routes feel more challenging than the mileage may suggest. The terrain on this trip includes a mix of paved country lanes, coastal footpaths and stone steps, with some steep or exposed sections.

Other sources (such as Map My Ride and Garmin devices) may give differing elevation figures due to different GPS and mapping technologies. Why Travel with Backroads in Dalmatian Coast

Time to Go Overboard

After a day of exploring on foot by the turquoise waters of the Adriatic, at some point you naturally want to take a dip. And the best place to do it is back on board our private trabakul, the double-masted sailing coaster unique to this region, where the crew drops anchor so you can walk the plank—in a good way. Plunge into the sea for a refreshing swim, then relax on deck with a drink as the next island comes into view.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Dalmatian Coast trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

The Best Leaders in Dalmatian Coast

Backroads has the best-qualified people to lead your trip in Dalmatian Coast, and our guests back that up, rating our Trip Leaders an average of 9.75 out of 10 for all-around quality of performance. Get the facts (and no fluff) on how we recruit and develop the very best people for your trip.

A Variety of Routes Each Day

In Dalmatian Coast you head off each morning after choosing among several expertly designed routes—all with detailed directions, mileage and shuttle options. Unlike trips with one fixed daily route (or worse, one guide that everyone's obliged to follow), you're free to enjoy the best of the region at your pace, stopping wherever you want to explore further.

Experts with Secrets to Share

In choosing the ideal experts to enrich your travel experience, we look for people with a wealth of local knowledge, but also the ability to convey their insights in English. Too often travelers find themselves smiling politely, not quite understanding what they're being told. Our experts share intriguing facts, anecdotes and inside stories that stay with you forever.

We Live in the Neighborhood

Our Trip Leaders in Dalmatian Coast live in the area and are deeply engaged in their communities, giving them unique inside knowledge they're happy to share in making your experience that much richer. They'll introduce you to people, customs and parts of town you'd likely never encounter on your own—and teach you a few local phrases to help break the ice.

The Right Local Pairings

Our Trip Leaders combine deep local expertise with a firm grasp of North American expectations around quality of service. By the same token, we pair experienced Backroads leaders with local guides who know how to cater to your needs while cracking open the culture or natural history in ways that are meaningful, memorable and often magical.

We've Set the Standard

For nearly four decades we've worked to earn and maintain our right to call Backroads the world's #1 active travel company. In pursuing that vision on behalf of our guests, we believe we've set the standard for our industry—captured in the Backroads Quality Guide, which clearly sets out the benchmarks of excellence, choice and support that we live by

Quality You Can Measure

Since 1979, Backroads Founder and President Tom Hale has shown that staying #1 means constantly evaluating our performance using the best possible source of information: our guests. As we systematically analyze your feedback on our trip consultants, leaders, hotels, meals and on-trip activities, we never stop working to make a great company even better.

Your Hotels Are Locked In

It may seem obvious to say the great hotels we tell you about are the ones you'll actually stay in. But the fact is many companies haven't even booked the places they promise and are later forced to settle for inferior alternatives. We book our hotels and exact rooms long in advance—often over two years—so you stay where you expect to stay.

We Know Where We're Going

Tom Hale has been keeping Backroads on track, with one eye on the horizon, since 1979. His passion for active travel, and for ensuring the highest-quality travel experience, is evident in every detail we add to make a guest's trip unforgettable—and the fact he's right there in the office, making it happen. To hear Tom describe his vision, watch our video.

The Value of Casual Hotels

In addition to the ideal balance of comfort and hospitality in our choice of lodgings, this trip featuring Casual Hotels includes nearly all of your meals, plus everything from cocktail receptions to the best snacks along the road. So there's rarely a need to reach for your wallet – we've got you covered.

In Europe Since 1988

Backroads has been welcoming active travelers to Europe since before the Berlin Wall came down. Today it's virtually our second home. We know the perfect roads and trails, the most scenic valleys and hilltop towns, the hidden churches and gem-like museums, the up-and-coming vintners and celebrated chefs—and, of course, all the best places to stay.
