Along the Adriatic from Dubrovnik to the Bay of Kotor
What unites these two distinct countries? History, language... and miles and miles of sparkling Adriatic coastline. The common ground between Croatia and Montenegro is not ground at all, but water.
Highlights
- Go beyond bustling Dubrovnik to discover the city’s backyard: e-biking in the Konavle Valley, strolling on Lopud and swimming in the turquoise coves of the Pelješac Peninsula
- Sample crisp local wines paired with farm-to-table cuisine and fresh Adriatic seafood
- Wander alpine slopes high in Montenegro’s Lovćen National Park, home to 5,700-foot Mt. Lovćen
- Kayak the Bay of Kotor, named a World Heritage landscape for its steep fjord-like walls
- Share these larger-than-life landscapes with the even larger personalities of our longtime local friends, who hike with us, invite us for dinner and more
Start Dubrovnik, Croatia
End Tivat, Montenegro or Dubrovnik, Croatia

Itinerary
Days 1-2
Welcome to Dubrovnik, whose tiled roofs, ornate towers and medieval walls have earned it the nickname “Pearl of the Adriatic” • Head to the wine country that’s home to California Zinfandel’s closest ancestor and hop on your bike to pedal between vineyards and through sleepy coastal villages • Stay in the heart of the Dubrovnik Riviera • Board a private boat to sleepy Lopud Island, where you stroll past the mansions of 16th-century sea captains • Dine at the 400-year-old home of local friends in a village near Dubrovnik • Dip in the crystal-blue water of one of the Adriatic’s only sandy beaches.
Nights 1-2
Housed in a former 1913 royal villa with a chic modern facelift, this lavish seaside hotel sits just outside the Old Town's gates. (pool, spa)

Days 3-6
E-bike through the mountain-rimmed bowl of the Konavle Valley before it’s time to hop the border into Montenegro • Walk along a ridgeline high above the Bay of Kotor • Stroll the lanes of crumbling Kotor, an ancient city stuffed between water and cliffs that’s often described as Dubrovnik’s wilder little sibling • Head to the heights of towering Lovćen National Park for see-forever views stretching clear across this tiny country • Bid farewell to the Bay of Kotor on a kayaking excursion to Our Lady of the Rocks Island.
Nights 3-5
With design inspired by the Venetian Renaissance, this luxurious hotel was built as part of the master-planned Porto Montenegro neighborhood. As such, it's in the heart of the action on the walkable, ritzy promenade where fine dining and boutiques rub shoulders with cafés, farmer's market stalls and the largest superyacht harbor in Europe. We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
This trip involves two international border crossings as we exit and reenter the European Union, crossing between Croatia (EU) and Montenegro. While sometimes the crossing can be as quick as a few minutes, we've also experienced delays of up to several hours, particularly since the implementation of the EU's new Entry/Exit System (EES) in 2026. One of these two border crossings is en route to our end-of-trip drop-off option in Dubrovnik; you can be prepared for possible delays by booking an evening flight out of Dubrovnik or flying the day after your trip ends. You can also avoid the issue altogether by flying out of Tivat, our other drop-off option. To learn more about EES, visit travel-europe.europa.eu/ees/ltr.
