Itinerary
Days 1-2
A morning gondola ride and lunch at a cozy mountain hut set the tone for the coming week • Hike down into Gstaad, where our glorious spa hotel welcomes us with a French flair • Stroll Gstaad’s cobblestone main drag to ogle boutiques frequented by part-time residents including Julie Andrews and Madonna • Views stretch forever as we hike across the top of the Wispile Mountain • Stop trailside at the dairy of a local cheesemaker who shows us how he makes Alpine cheese in a giant copper pot • Stroll along the shore of jewel-like Lake Lauenen • Hop a quick evening train to French-speaking Switzerland, where a fondue dinner is served.
Nights 1-2
Set amid manicured gardens in central Gstaad, Le Grand Bellevue offers a refined alpine escape centered around one of Switzerland's most impressive spas. Bright and tranquil chalet-inspired rooms offer luxurious, cozy furnishings with breathtaking alpine views. (pool, spa)
Days 3-4
A local hiking guide joins us for the traverse from Gstaad to Lenk, through phantasmagorical gypsum formations located high on the mountain • Relax in our grand hotel’s Seven Sources spa • Hike in a loop that links the valley’s waterfalls, from the towering Simmenfall to the Seven Fountains, where you can get close enough to feel the spray • “Eating local” gets a new meaning as you dig into a lunch of cold cuts and cheeses on the farm that produces them • Meet up with an artisan who introduces you to the traditional Swiss art of Scherenschnitte, or paper-cutting.
Nights 3-4
You're invited to revel in the steamy thermal waters and gourmet cuisine at this historic grande dame. Have your torte and eat it too with world-class luxury and creature comforts set right in the heart of the towering mountains of the upper Simmental. Relais & Châteaux. (pool, spa)
Days 5-6
Make our final mountain crossing over the Hahnenmoos Pass, which Catholic priests once used to flee from the Reformation • Chase a grand finale of 360-degree views if you choose to bag the peak of the Regenboldshorn • Opt to hike through flower-covered slopes down into Adelboden, our final destination, or hop on a Trotti bike: a uniquely Swiss type of downhill scooter • Toast to our adventure together as alpenglow lights up the Engstligenfall, Adelboden’s iconic cascade, then spend your last morning strolling up to the falls’ thundering base.
Night 5
Here grand-hotel sensibilities come with modern interiors in a jewel-box package. Unwind in the welcoming gardens or take in views of the thundering Engstligen Fall from the infinity pool perched on the edge of the valley. Relais & Châteaux. (pool, spa)

We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
Many of our hikes through the Alps are remote and do not intersect with roads. Vehicles (or mountain infrastructure like gondolas) will get us to and from the trailheads, but due to the nature of these trails, we won’t see support vans along the route. Ample trail support in the form of water, snacks and encouragement is provided by your Backroads leaders and local guides.
We ordinarily staff our trips with two Backroads leaders, plus one or more support leaders who are generally responsible for van support. Due to our lower reliance on driving during this trip, we’re able to offer our usual high level of support without the help of a support leader.
While the hotels on this trip offer outstanding service and amenities, please note that not all of them are equipped with air-conditioning. Despite the region’s temperate climate and cool nights, guest rooms can occasionally become warm during peak temperatures.
