Itinerary
Days 1-3
Meet in Innsbruck, known as the ultimate Alpine getaway • Shuttle into the heart of the Arlberg to begin your hike from tiny Stuben, a remote warming stop for travelers crossing once-treacherous Arlberg Pass • Cross over historic Flexen Pass, a feat of modern engineering, named for the “flexen,” or sharply angled bends, in the original mule track • In Zürs, a cable car is your ticket to a hearty lunch at an Alpine hut with views of turquoise Lake Zürser and towering peaks • Make your way to Lech via cable car and a riverside stroll, a direct route from the lake or a challenging detour into the mountains • Settle into our family-run hotel, where you can relax at the spa and enjoy exceptional Austrian cuisine • Hop off the cable car at Oberlech for a loop hike to Lake Butzen and the chance to summit a peak or two • Catch the Wanderbus to emerald Formarin Lake for an unforgettable hike through one of the last remaining wild river landscapes on the continent • Discover fossils, waterfalls and Alpine meadows as you follow the Lech River on your journey back to Lech.
Nights 1-3
Run by a warm, well-traveled local family who’ve hiked every trail they recommend, this contemporary Austrian boutique hotel is a welcoming home base after days spent exploring. Enjoying a scenic perch above the village, the hotel offers sweeping mountain views, a welcoming tea lounge and bar, and exceptional cuisine that’s sophisticated, creative and refreshingly unfussy. (spa)
Days 4-6
Today’s hike across the high Alpine Vorarlberg-Tyrol border to St. Anton is the epic stunner you’ve been waiting for! • At almost 8,000 feet, we may cross some snowfields • Surrounded by panoramic views, we enjoy classic mountain fare and warm hospitality at another unique hut • In the afternoon, choose your adventure: descend through Alpine pastures toward Zürs, add a scenic out-and-back along mountain-hugging trails with views into the Almajur Valley or tackle a demanding traverse to iconic Valluga, finishing with a cable car descent • Follow the final stretch of the Arlberg Trail from St. Anton toward Stuben, passing historic St. Christoph (a stop on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route) • Hike into remote high country, keeping an eye out for magnificent Haflinger horses roaming the mountainside • Lunch at photogenic Kaltenberghütte, then embark on a rugged descent to a Kneipp pool for post-hike recovery before a quick shuttle home • Hike a ridgeline section of the Adlerweg or stroll down to Gampen for a cable car boost back to the hotel • Gather for a farewell lunch.
Nights 4-5
Pairing a proud heritage with modern comforts, this fifth-generation family-owned hotel sits on the edge of St. Anton’s charming pedestrian zone. We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
Due to the Austrian Alps' rugged terrain, you can look forward to some exhilarating—but steep!—climbs and descents along rocky and sometimes uneven paths. Please note that there’s no van support on this trip (you can imagine why!) so you should be comfortable with Alpine elevation and remote routes. Ample trail support in the form of water, snacks and encouragement is provided by your Backroads leaders, and we’ll make use of the extensive network of mountain huts for lunches and snack stops.
