Dolomites Walking & Hiking Tour

Italian Sojourn in the Majestic Dolomites

  • Trek through magnificent landscapes and picturesque villages with diverse cultural roots and traditions
  • Ride chairlifts, then hike past grassy meadows, pine forests, alpenrose, edelweiss and storybook mountain huts
  • Savor fine dining and local flavors in the enchanting authentic mountain town of San Cassiano
  • Relish views of the Cinque Torri stone pinnacles, before descending to World War I relics at an open-air museum

The Dolomites cast a spell. The immense mountains. The sweeping flower-filled pastures and endless views from gondola rides. The simple goodness of spaghetti al ragù at a rifugio trailside hut. The decadence of gourmet cuisine. Enjoy the good life—the Italians call it benessere—and be spellbound in the Dolomites.

We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

Our daily route options may travel in different directions from each other, depending on the route level. Please keep this in mind when choosing your walking/hiking option each day, especially if connecting up with other guests midday is important to you.

Two Leaders

We ordinarily staff our trips with three leaders: two leaders out on the trail offering support—allowing everyone to have the experience they want, whether it's an easygoing interpretative walk or a rigorous hike—while the third leader moves the van from trailhead to trail end. This trip is a little different in that our routes are a combination of loop hikes and out-and-back trails that begin and end in the same location. This means that you'll still have the same two leaders providing excellent trail support without the need for a third leader to move the van.

This was our first Backroads trip and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The leaders were exceptional and every detail was thought through. The three inns were outstanding and unique. It was the best way to experience the Dolomites and all its beauty and culture.

Fun with Family in the Dolomites

from NYC Metro Area

Comments about Dolomites Walking & Hiking Tour:

In true Backroads fashion, my family and I were treated to a gorgeous region in style. We were able to partake in as much hiking, hotel-lounging, and socializing as we individually preferred, making for a relaxing and pleasant family trip. Our leaders anticipated our needs before we could ask and always had fascinating and useful information about the culture and geography that we were exploring.

An outstanding week with great hikes in a beautiful area.

Hiking and Eating

from Atlanta

Comments about Dolomites Walking & Hiking Tour:

Scenery was gorgeous and the food delicious. My leaders were delightful and fun to be with. The only thing that I was surprised about was that the Dolomites were so crowded. I've never hiked anywhere in the world where there were so many people on the trails. For me, the crowds detracted from the majestic splendor of the Dolomites and the feeling of remoteness. That being said, Backroads did a beautiful job with my group and we all had a great time.

Why Travel with Backroads in Dolomites

We Grew Up in These Mountains

This classic trip among the craggy limestone peaks is a long-time Backroads favorite, and we know why: it was created by our Regional Manager for Italy, Jeff Cantarutti, who's been designing trips for nearly 25 years and – even more important – has deep family roots in the region. Welcome to Jeff's backyard. You won't want to leave.

Only the Best Hotels

On this trip featuring Premiere Hotels, you can count on the best lodgings Dolomites has to offer. In fact, the hotels we've chosen in this region have higher retail room rates than those offered by any other active travel company—even when their trips cost more.

A Variety of Routes Each Day

In Dolomites you head off each morning after choosing among several expertly designed routes—all with detailed directions, mileage and shuttle options. Unlike trips with one fixed daily route (or worse, one guide that everyone's obliged to follow), you're free to enjoy the best of the region at your pace, stopping wherever you want to explore further.

Your Trip Will Run. Period.

Under our Book with Confidence policy, your Backroads trip will run even for one or two people (or a family of three or four), subject to a nominal extra fee. Or transfer to another trip, and we'll give you a credit. It's all part of our trademark commitment to treating guests with integrity, transparency and total accountability. Read all the details.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Dolomites trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

The Right Local Pairings

Our Trip Leaders combine deep local expertise with a firm grasp of North American expectations around quality of service. By the same token, we pair experienced Backroads leaders with local guides who know how to cater to your needs while cracking open the culture or natural history in ways that are meaningful, memorable and often magical.

In Europe Since 1988

Backroads has been welcoming active travelers to Europe since before the Berlin Wall came down. Today it's virtually our second home. We know the perfect roads and trails, the most scenic valleys and hilltop towns, the hidden churches and gem-like museums, the up-and-coming vintners and celebrated chefs—and, of course, all the best places to stay.

Quality You Can Measure

Since 1979, Backroads Founder and President Tom Hale has shown that staying #1 means constantly evaluating our performance using the best possible source of information: our guests. As we systematically analyze your feedback on our trip consultants, leaders, hotels, meals and on-trip activities, we never stop working to make a great company even better.

We've Set the Standard

For nearly four decades we've worked to earn and maintain our right to call Backroads the world's #1 active travel company. In pursuing that vision on behalf of our guests, we believe we've set the standard for our industry—captured in the Backroads Quality Guide, which clearly sets out the benchmarks of excellence, choice and support that we live by

We Know Where We're Going

Tom Hale has been keeping Backroads on track, with one eye on the horizon, since 1979. His passion for active travel, and for ensuring the highest-quality travel experience, is evident in every detail we add to make a guest's trip unforgettable—and the fact he's right there in the office, making it happen. To hear Tom describe his vision, watch our video.
