Itinerary

Days 1-2
After meeting in Hamburg, the great port city on the Elbe, shuttle to Blockland Nature Preserve for our first ride through marshes and grasslands • Bike all the way into Bremen, where our grand hotel is tucked into a historic city park • Wander the brick lanes of Bremen’s old Schnoor quarter • Bike paths lead us through the Untere Wümme region’s maze of waterways • Pass through artist’s colonies where mounds of hydrangeas and climbing roses shelter thatched-roof cottages.

Nights 1-2
In the heart of Bremen's Bürgerpark, this grand hotel was built in 1872 as one of the park's public monuments. Today the bar, restaurant and front plaza with its fountain are still pilgrimage spots for a chic locals' day out; staying here after hours makes us VIPs at an icon of the city. (pool, spa)

Days 3-4
Cross into the Netherlands via the fortified town of Bourtange, a fortress gone pastoral with its sod battlements and defensive canals • Relax over lunch at a lakeside pavilion • A local guide takes us walking through the boulevards and squares of Groningen’s grand Binnenstad (Inner City) • Bike paths link the sleepy villages of the Wierdendorpen, built upon artificial mounds in an ancient design for flood safety • Cruise through fields and alongside country canals.

Nights 3-4
A cozy historic hideaway that opens directly onto the walled village green of the Prinsentuin (Prince's Garden), the Prinsenhof is tucked right into the action of Groningen's colorful city center, steps from the Spilsluizen canal and Old Town squares. (spa)

Days 5-6
Cycle between old-growth oaks and windswept stretches of heather in wild Drentsche Aa National Park • Settle into our elegant countryside retreat • A Michelin-starred dinner venue serves up a culinary grand finale • Visit Keukenhof, the spectacular spring garden which opens up its acres of landscaped blooms for only a month a year • Say goodbye to your fellow travelers in dreamy Amsterdam, a capital city which beckons you to extend your trip.

Night 5
A full set of amenities awaits at this chic retreat built into a country manor: golf, farm-to-table cuisine and white-glove service. While the hospitality is civilized, the peaceful woodland setting makes nature one of the property's stars. (pool, spa)

We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
The Low Countries are famous for their love of bikes. And that love of bikes has created an amazing network of bike paths and routes that extend throughout each country. Many of the paths we utilize on this trip are the equivalent of scenic byways, linking quaint villages and big cities alike. Navigating these intricate bike routes may require more attention than usual—expect some stops to ensure you’re on the right track!—as well as increased attention to cycling etiquette, laws and traffic as you share the “road” with the many locals going about their business by bike. Note that these paths vary in road surface, with some sections of gravel, dirt and cobblestones.
Tulips are early-blooming spring flowers; keep in mind that visiting during their season means traveling well outside of summer—with weather to match! Expect spring showers and gusty winds on your trip, and pack accordingly. Some years, weather during our cooler springtime trips includes hail and even snow!
As unpredictable as the weather can be, so can the blooms themselves. Like peak fall colors or the northern lights, the exact timing of spring flower displays varies from year to year. While the timing of this trip aims to align with tulip season, please remember that we can’t guarantee fields of tulips. That part is in Mother Nature’s hands—the rest is in ours.
