What’s in a Name?
Slovenia screams love. It is, in fact, the only country in the world with the word “love” in its name. Yes, Slovenia actually means “land of the Slovenes,” but this delightful coincidence has been embraced and widely used in national branding since the early 2000s, when Slovenia gained its recognition as a recreational paradise, especially with visitors seeking a sustainable and green travel destination.
There’s a lot of love for Ljubljana (pronounced lyoo-BLYAH-nah), too. Many etymologists believe that the capital city's name is derived from the Slavic root word ljub, which means to love or to like, and that ljubljena means “the loved one.”
And Ljubljana certainly is beloved and lovely; residents and travelers alike stroll its elegant bridges crossing the Ljubljanica River, people-watch from riverside cafés, and are fond of its buildings’ colorful facades and 11th-century hilltop castle. A Language Made for Two
Slovenia’s romantic character is part of its very language. Slovenian is one of relatively few languages in the world that still uses a special form called the grammatical dual, when referring to two people or two things, distinct from both the singular and the plural.
So, in Slovenian, there is a unique way to say “the two of us.” It’s a small but beautiful feature that makes the language feel wonderfully intimate and perfectly suited to couples.

A Heartfelt Symbol

It’s not uncommon to see a linden growing in the middle of the town center, because for centuries these trees have served as a gathering place for communities to talk, celebrate and generally share important moments. There’s Even a Heart-Shaped Road
Tucked away in Slovenia’s picturesque wine-growing region, not far from its border with Austria, is a small village with a truly unique feature: a road that forms a perfectly shaped heart. Surrounded by rolling vineyards, green hills, and a peaceful countryside, this charming road in Špičnik has become one of the area’s most distinctive sights, best appreciated from a viewpoint above the village.
Countless Romantic Settings
What makes Slovenia truly special is the remarkable variety packed into a country about the size of New Jersey. On a single journey, you can wake up surrounded by the Julian Alps, explore the incredible landscapes of Triglav National Park—home to the nation’s tallest peak, 9,400-foot Mount Triglav, as well as turquoise river gorges and waterfalls—wander through forests of beech and fir, and then cruise over to its 30-mile coast, perhaps overnighting at a beach-resort town like Portorož or Ankaran.
However, if there’s one place in Slovenia that captures the magic of romance, it’s undoubtedly Lake Bled. Imagine a tranquil, turquoise-blue body of water ringed by mountains and, at its center, a tiny island that you can boat to in a wooden vessel called a pletna. This island features a Baroque-style church reached by climbing 99 stone steps, and couples like to ring its bell and make a wish together. Above the lake, perched dramatically on a rocky cliff, stands Bled Castle. It sounds like a scene from a storybook.
