Itinerary

Day 1
From Lárrede, a charming mountain town, hike on a trail sprinkled with Romanesque stone churches and medieval ruins • Continue past rocky mountainsides, through expansive emerald hills, all the way to our elegant retreat • Dine at one of Spain’s highest-altitude wineries, where you can rest your feet, sample local varietals and learn how viticulturists grow grapes in such extreme conditions.




Night 1
A modern design with light-filled spaces and pale-wood paneling creates a cheery and inviting atmosphere perfect for relaxing and looking out at the nearby forests and the waters of the River Gállego. (pool, spa)

Days 2-3
Journey into the Tena Valley along the edge of the beautiful Embalse de Bubal reservoir • Pause for a break in the quaint village of Lanuza • Hilltop roads wind to medieval Sallent de Gállego • Past mountain meadows and black pine forests, trek in the shade of Peña Foratata (the pierced peak), known for the dramatic hole in its rocky summit • Lunch at a homey mountain asador (grill restaurant) • A local guide joins us to illuminate the region’s history, geology, flora and fauna • Vibrant trails end at our hotel for a scrumptious Pyrenean dinner.

Tucked deep in the mountains, tasteful design allows views of the breathtaking landscapes to shine at this Tena Valley hotel. (pool)

Days 4-6
Tackle high paths along the GR11 • A challenging climb ends at the calming waters of Ibon de Anayet • Walk through the Canfranc train station and tunnel, renowned for its intricate architecture and dramatic WWII history • Hike up the Izas Valley and to the foothills of Moleta Peak where views of the mountains and valleys await • Trek a part of the Camino de Santiago, and even cross the border into France! • End your trip in artistic Zaragoza.

Our hikes through the region’s captivating terrain are often on trails that do not intersect with roads. Vehicles will sometimes get us to and from the trailheads, but the nature of these trails is such that we won’t see our vans along the route. Trail support in the form of water, snacks and encouragement is provided by your Backroads leaders.
