We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
In order to access some of the best hikes in Los Huemules Reserve, we stay two nights at the unique Patagonia Eco Domes in El Chaltén. Our eco domes have plush beds, private en suite bathrooms, cozy padded walls (that may let in sounds from strong winds or nearby domes) and one transparent wall with views of the famous Torre Fitz Roy. Interior lighting can be dim since power is supplied by solar panels and heat is from wood stoves (which you may need to feed with more logs during particularly cold nights). Each dome is fitted with USB charging outlets while community areas offer standard power outlets. There is no cell or internet service.
In order to experience the full grandeur of Argentina's Patagonia region, we spend more time shuttling and on boat crossings on this trip than on a typical Backroads trip. This enables us to explore the incredible variety of ecosystems and scenery this region has to offer.
Our hikes through Patagonia's captivating, yet rugged, terrain climb rocky and sometimes uneven paths, many of which are remote and do not intersect with roads. Vehicles will get us to and from the trailheads, but due to the nature of these trails, we won't see our vehicles along the route. Ample trail support in the form of water, snacks and encouragement is provided by your Backroads leaders and local guides.
Most hikes on this itinerary take place in Argentine national parks and unlike other Backroads Walking & Hiking Trips, regulations require a certified local guide to accompany us. We offer flexibility by dividing into several groups of different paces, with each group hiking in the company of a local guide.
Trips with a small number of guests may be supported by one Backroads Trip Leader and a team of knowledgeable local guides. There will always be at least two people hiking on the trail with you.
Because of Patagonia's extreme weather conditions and strong winds, mid-trip itinerary changes and boat crossings are possible. If severe weather affects our planned activities, your Trip Leaders will find alternative activities that you're sure to enjoy. Expect the unexpected in this remote region, including slow or no internet and the occasional ATM possibly running out of cash.

Magical Patagonia!
Truly the trip of a lifetime, seeing and experiencing Patagonia through amazing hikes, wonderful guides, generous hosts. A very special trip.
Spectacular trip!!!
This was an amazing travel adventure. Unique and awesome sights and locations. But what made it special was the great care that went into arranging complex logistics and most of all, the great trip leaders an local guides, who were knowledgeable, attentive and caring. I cannot overemphasize how great this was: we felt supported and looked after at every step of the trip. Highly recommended!!

Trip of a Lifetime! Highly Recommend!
This was our first Backroads trip, and celebrated an early 30th Anniversary. It exceeded our expectations as we were blessed with such great weather it accentuated what was already a great trip. The guides were superb, we were blessed with a prompt, kind, and laid-back group, the accomodations were great, the details were great, the local guides were great - it was just all great! Came away feeling it was worth it, as though it was expensive for us I could see the value of what we were paying for by understanding all of the details they were handling in the travel logistics, local rules, taking care of the group's welfare and positive experience. Really can't say enough how impressed we were, and are looking forward to planning our next Backroads adventure!

Six Stars out of Five
Wow is all I can say! Backroads and our fabulous guides, Javi and Goya, made our adventure run absolutely flawlessly from start to finish. And what an adventure it was! A new vista, a new microclimate, and new geology with every step. We saw glaciers, many views of the fantastic Fitz Roy, forests, meadows, lakes, alpine rock fields--you name it. We're already looking to book our next Backroads trip, but there are so many to choose from!

Patagonia Hiking Trip
I was very impressed by our both of our leaders expertise and knowledge of Patagonia. They made me feel safe and comfortable the entire trip. They were kind, fun, compassionate and caring. They inspired me to learn more about the area and travel more in South America.
Patagonia Adventures
My Backroads experience to Patagonia in December 2024 was a 12/10! We were lucky to have amazing weather with postcard worthy views of Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre every day. The hikes were the right amount of challenging - each one different and unique. The best part of my experience was the camaraderie of my group and the dynamic duo trip leaders - Bruno and Carlos who complimented each other so well and were amazing. I can't imagine going on another Backroads trip without them. Nos vemos pronto Argentina!

Amazing Family Adventure
Did this trip over the New Year break. Everything was wonderful from our guides- Luci and Cata to the views and hikes to the food. It was my kids first backroads trip and they loved being with us and other families. There was something for everyone to do. Some people did the shorter walks and some did all of them. The asado on our first night was probably our best meal experience in Argentina and we had some good ones. The views, my pictures can't do it justice. The accommodations were better than what our travel agent booked us in as 5 star in other parts of the country. I was worried about the eco domes and they were great. Bonus that they had bathrooms. The food we had everywhere was delicious- pretty natural. We met wonderful families and guides and were sad to leave them. Hikes were hard but doable if you are in decent shape. We also had great weather. I recommend hiking boots and layers.
WOW! What a wild and wonderful experience!
Patagonia knocked our socks off, as they say! In 6 days, our Backroads itinerary gave us a snapshot of this incredible, untamed region. From a cruise on Lake Argentina to experience icebergs up close, to horseback riding up and down the dunes of wild and windy Lake Viedma, to several long yet rewarding hikes up, down and around the breathtaking region of El Chaltén, we were awed and astounded by utterly amazing views. The tawny and rusty hues of the desert; the various, vivid blues of the lakes; the green turning to yellow, orange and brown of the lenga trees; the pinks and grays of the granite peaks; the panoply of stars as seen from our Eco Dome; all were just awesome to behold. Our trip leaders were super knowledgeable and exuded enthusiasm- they truly made the trip fabulous.
An Amazing Patagonia Journey From Glaciers to Fitz Roy
It was an extremely well-run tour due to the efforts of our trip leaders, Lucrecia and Connor. They kept us organized and made sure that everyone had a great time. In addition they provided a wealth of information about Patagonia during our treks. We stayed at comfortable lodgings and the scenic eco domes with a view of Fitz Roy. The food was delicious especially our asados in El Calafate. We were sad to see the trip end.
Patagonia!!! Yayyyyyyyyyy!!!
Great leaders, great guides, great hikes, great sights, great meals, be ready to gain weight even if you do all the hard hikes!🤣. Great accommodations, great new friends, very smooth and worry free! Do it! Do it! Do it!!!🤗🤗🤗
