National Park Winter Serenity from Bozeman to Jackson
Of course there's value in sharing. But having Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks all to ourselves seems pretty sweet. The sight of bison lumbering across the icy landscape. Otters fishing in semi-frozen streams. Maybe even a glimpse of a cautious gray wolf. A winter wonderland of epic proportions. And we can't wait to share it with you on our Yellowstone & Tetons Snow Adventure tour.

Itinerary

Day 1
Journey into wintry Yellowstone National Park • Witness steam rising from colorful geothermal pools amid the winter landscape on a guided snowshoe excursion at Mammoth Hot Springs • Snowshoe alongside travertine terraces while taking in views of the dynamic topography sculpted almost exclusively by hot springs • At Sage Lodge, cozy up near the fireplace or take a soak in an outdoor hot tub.

Night 1
A luxurious resort nestled between two mountain ranges above the Yellowstone River—a place where you can engage fully with the natural elements of Montana. (spa)

Days 2-3
Travel by snowcoach to the awe-inspiring Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, one of the park’s most photographed spots with its immense size, multicolored canyon walls and thundering waterfalls • In winter, massive Lower Falls often freezes into a natural ice sculpture—truly a magical sight! • Explore the rim on snowshoes, passing through stands of snow-dusted lodgepole pine • Watch for bison foraging in open meadows and steam rising from colorful geothermal pools • Embark on a snowshoe adventure to peaceful Upper Geyser Basin, with the highest concentration of geothermal features in the park • Pass by steaming Morning Glory Pool and stop to witness Castle Geyser's turreted cone eruption and surges from Spasmodic Geyser's two sunken pools • See Old Faithful Geyser blow its steam • At the lodge, grab a pair of skates and wander over to the ice skating pond or kick your feet up by the bonfire.

Nights 2-3
A superb example of classic "parkitecture," this lodge features log and cedar accents, rustic wildlife-themed décor and proximity to the famed geyser.

Days 4-6
Head out early morning for a snowshoe trek through the forest before hopping in a snowcoach to journey through the southern reaches of Yellowstone National Park to Grand Teton National Park • Stop to explore West Thumb Geyser Basin and take in vistas of Yellowstone Lake • In awe-inspiring Grand Teton National Park, snowshoe to Bradley and Taggart Lakes under towering peaks • Wander the wood sidewalks of the Old West town of Jackson, browsing its art galleries and shops • Enjoy a horse-drawn sleigh ride through herds of elk • Discover local artists' work at the National Wildlife Art Museum.

We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
On this trip we stay at Old Faithful Snow Lodge. While this accommodation reflects the natural surroundings of the national parks and provides unparalleled access to the best activities in the area, it is simpler than is typical of Backroads lodging. The lodge has basic guest rooms that are not equipped with televisions. Please note that internet and cell phone service are extremely limited throughout the parks.
The National Park Service limits the size of all groups in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. Accordingly, you'll hike and snowshoe in small groups with Backroads leaders and local guides. We appreciate your cooperation with the parks' regulations.
Winter weather in Yellowstone and Tetons can be among the coldest in the United States, but you can comfortably enjoy the outdoors if you're properly dressed. In order to snowshoe or hike in the snow, you must wear waterproof snow boots or hiking boots and waterproof breathable pants, jacket and gloves. Your clothing should be warm enough to allow you to comfortably remain outside in below-freezing conditions for 2–4 hours at a time. Layers are encouraged for when we snowshoe.
You can't have a winter wonderland without some winter weather. During December, January and February—when our trips run—snow and below-freezing temperatures are likely, and even rain is possible. Please know that if, during the trip, we encounter severe weather that affects our planned activities, your Trip Leaders will find alternate activities that you're sure to enjoy.
