Itinerary

Day 1
Journey into wintry Yellowstone National Park • Witness steam rising from colorful geothermal pools amid the winter landscape on a guided snowshoe excursion at Mammoth Hot Springs • Snowshoe alongside travertine terraces while taking in views of the dynamic topography sculpted almost exclusively by hot springs • At Sage Lodge, cozy up near the fireplace or take a soak in an outdoor hot tub with a backdrop of snow-covered peaks.

Night 1
An idyllic resort nestled between two mountain ranges above the Yellowstone River—a place where you can engage fully with the natural elements of Montana. (spa)

Days 2-3
Travel deep into the park by snowcoach to the awe-inspiring Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, one of the park’s most photographed spots with its immense size, multicolored canyon walls and thundering waterfalls • In winter, massive Lower Falls often freezes into a natural ice sculpture—truly a magical sight! • Explore the rim on snowshoes, passing through stands of snow-dusted lodgepole pine • Watch for bison foraging in open meadows and steam rising from colorful geothermal pools • Embark on a snowshoe adventure to peaceful Upper Geyser Basin, with the highest concentration of geothermal features in the park • Pass by steaming Morning Glory Pool and stop to witness Castle Geyser's turreted cone • See Old Faithful Geyser blow its steam high into the sky • At the lodge, grab a pair of skates and wander over to the ice skating pond or kick up your feet by the bonfire.

Nights 2-3
A superb example of classic "parkitecture," this lodge features log and cedar accents, rustic wildlife-themed décor and proximity to the famed geyser.

Days 4-6
Head out early morning for a snowshoe trek through the forest before hopping in a snowcoach to journey through the southern reaches of Yellowstone National Park and into Grand Teton National Park • Stop to explore West Thumb Geyser Basin and take in vistas of Yellowstone Lake • In awe-inspiring Grand Teton National Park, snowshoe to Bradley and Taggart Lakes under towering peaks • Wander the wood sidewalks of the old west town of Jackson, browsing its art galleries and shops • Enjoy a horse-drawn sleigh ride through herds of elk • Discover local history through artists' work featuring the area's landscape and wildlife at the National Museum of Wildlife Art.

We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
On this trip we stay at Old Faithful Snow Lodge. While this accommodation reflects the natural surroundings of the national parks and provides unparalleled access to the best activities in the area, it is simpler than is typical of Backroads lodging. The lodge has basic guest rooms that are not equipped with televisions. Please note that internet and cell phone service are extremely limited throughout the parks.
Winter weather in Yellowstone and Tetons can be among the coldest in the United States, but you can comfortably enjoy the outdoors if you're properly dressed. In order to snowshoe or hike in the snow, you must wear waterproof snow or hiking boots and waterproof, breathable pants, jacket and gloves. Your clothing should be warm enough to allow you to comfortably remain outside in below-freezing conditions for two to four hours at a time. Layers are encouraged for when we snowshoe.

I feel like I understand Yellowstone's significance in a new
This was a terrific trip that was very well organized. While there is a lot of shuttling, the vehicles were amazing in and of themselves, and the subcontracted drivers were as knowledgeable and service-oriented as the Backroads leaders. It was a great opportunity to be out in one of the wildest places in the country during the winter. There were equal amounts of emphasis on history, wildlife, geology, and culture. Highly recommended.
Winter Wonderland
Everything about this trip exceeded our expectations! The leaders were phenomenal, the activities were fun, breathtaking scenery and our group was great. And we lucked out with excellent weather. 🙏😆. We loved our first Backroads Travel experience!
Escape the crowds with this winter adventure
If you'd like to experience Yellowstone and the Tetons without the crowds, consider this winter trip. The roads through Yellowstone are open only for licensed snow coaches so you'll have a front row seat to the abundant wildlife including bison, coyote, and various birds. Be prepared, however, for the cold because it was very chilly during our recent trip. The cold weather only makes the warmth of the lodges more welcoming though after a fun day of snow-shoeing. Plus you'll arrive with a healthy appetite for some tasty and unique regional cuisine.

All the beauty of Yellowstone and the Tetons on this trip
Snow shoeing is an enjoyable work out. The equipment provided was wonderful. We saw all the highlights that Yellowstone and the Tetons have to offer. Food was ample and delicious as always. Accommodations are exactly what I would expect from back roads even the Yellowstone lodge was nicely appointed yet simple. The guides Sam and Sarah on this trip were hands-down, the friendliest and most knowledgeable I have ever traveled with. Touring Yellowstone in the snow cabs was comfortable and fun. I highly recommend this vacation to anyone who is not afraid to spend some time out in the snow. The reward is nature's beauty and plenty of animal sightings.
Exceeded all expectations!
Best way to experience Yellowstone and Grand Tetons in the winter. Great activities for older teens, loved being active with the snow showing every day, great food and premiere accommodations. Best part was our guides. Sarah and Sam were so knowledgeable about the geology and the animals, the area, we learned so much from them. They were enthusiastic and so nice! Felt so taken care of as well. Perfect winter trip. Will definitely take another Backroads experience!

Snowy Adventure
I wanted to see the bison in snow and I did! Another guest wanted to see a fox and we did! Backroads delivered a great snow adventure in our beautiful National Parks in Yellowstone & Grand Tetons. We had been on two other Backroad trips in the parks in summer & fall; winter is unique. Our guides Sydney & Laurie were wonderful. This was #11 Backroads trip for us & look forward to picking #12!

Such an amazing adventure!
We had an awesome experience. The activities themselves were engaging and fun, our guides were knowledgeable, extremely accommodating, and flexible, as well as fun to be around, and we got to see/experience much more than we would have had we tried to take this trip on our own.
