Itinerary
Day 1
Start your adventure with a walk below the peaks of Val Gardena • Today’s trek leads you from colorful Ortisei through the Ladin village of Santa Cristina and on to Selva Gardena, your home for the trip • Wander through traditional Alpine villages rich in South Tyrolean architectural details • At our luxurious retreat, cozy up next to the fireplace, soak in a hot tub or choose from the hotel’s extensive spa menu • Over a welcome reception featuring South Tyrolean wines, toast to the winter adventure ahead!
Nights 1-4
Just outside the center of Selva di Val Gardena, the Alpenroyal Hotel is an elegant alpine resort overlooking the surrounding Dolomite peaks. In summer, nearby trails lead into the meadows and high passes of the Dolomites, while winter brings easy access to the paths and slopes of Val Gardena. Day 2
Ascend into a snowy landscape via gondola to Puez-Odle Nature Park • Snowshoe above Col Raiser under the Geisler Group and take in 360-degree views of jagged Dolomite peaks • Explore quiet forested trails on your snowshoes, give one of the area’s famed winter sports a try or join in on the après-ski fun with an aperitivo in Selva Gardena • Wander the cobblestone streets of this bustling resort town • Browse the shops and sample regional delights.

Days 4-5
Ride a funicular to the Resciesa plateau for our final day of snowshoeing • Our route takes us along forested trails up above the tree line for sweeping vistas of the Austrian Alps and Val di Funes • Sway to traditional Tyrolean music and contemporary favorites at our farewell reception • Dine at the Michelin-starred Alpenroyal Gourmet Restaurant • Bundle up for your final morning in this mountain paradise on a walk to Völser Weiher, a lake surrounded by forest • A celebratory lunch in a fairy-tale village caps off your winter adventure.

We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
It’s essential to bring the appropriate gear to ensure an enjoyable trip experience. Your clothing should allow you to comfortably remain outdoors for two to four hours at a time, whether moving, standing still in the sun, or under rain and snow. To prevent chilling and overheating during outdoor activities, we recommend wearing waterproof insulated snow boots or insulated hiking boots; warm, breathable base layers of varying weights; and a waterproof outer shell or layer. A light daypack with rain cover will allow you to store extra layers as well as carry gloves, hats, buffs and other supplies while on our routes.
Mountain conditions are unpredictable, particularly in winter. For safety when exploring the snowy terrain, regulations require us to hike and snowshoe accompanied by local alpine guides. Their technical expertise allows us to respond nimbly and safely to current conditions–plus they bring a wealth of knowledge about the culture, history, and landscape of the region. Because of these regulations, this trip has fewer opportunities to split off from the group for solo hiking when compared to a typical Backroads trip.
