Quebec City & La Belle Province

  • Discover the impressive architecture, sophisticated cuisine and French heritage of historic Quebec City
  • Ride tranquil coastal roads and pause to visit artisans, vintners and farmers in charming towns along the way
  • Hike in the hills overlooking the pristine shores of the Saint Lawrence River, whose sun-dappled edges teem with aquatic birds
  • Spot breaching beluga, minke and fin whales on a boating excursion with an expert local naturalist

It would have been easier for Quebec to abandon its European ancestry. But it didn't. Everything about Quebec says old-world charm. You'll experience it riding with your family through farmland on idyllic islands. Taste it in every superb farm-to-table meal. The more you discover Quebec's culture, the more you'll appreciate why it has stayed true to its heart.

Itinerary

Days 1-2 Hike near the mighty St. Lawrence River and next to one of the most picturesque bays in the world | Explore Tadoussac, the first fur trading post in the New World | Today the town is considered the preeminent spot for whale-watching in eastern North America | Walk along the awe-inspiring Saguenay Fjord and St. Lawrence River | Look for whales and other marine life during a boat ride with a naturalist | Dine at charming restaurants where you can savor the famous Charlevoix gastronomy.

Days 3-4 erry to rural Isle-aux-Coudres and spin past old stone cottages, white-steepled churches and farms selling cider | Stop at Les Moulins, an early 19th-century stone windmill and watermill that still churn out wheat and buckwheat flour | Walk through forests of conifer and yellow birch to stunning Lac Georges | Hike across the taiga, a rich tundra-like ecosystem, in beautiful Parc des Grands-Jardins.

Days 5-6 Ride bucolic roads stopping to visit artisans, vintners and organic farmers on Île d’Orléans, a little island with apple orchards, stone windmills and Normandy-style cottages | Stop for a self-guided tour at Manoir Mauvide-Genest, one of the best-preserved houses on the island | Enjoy sweeping vistas and pastoral roads before zipping to enchanting Quebec City | Bike to the Plains of Abraham, site of a famous 1759 battle | Meander through old Quebec City on a historical walking tour.

Quebec's nickname is New France. And yes, there are castles and gourmet cuisine. But complementing the refinement is a stunning natural beauty and a rich colorful history—as well as a palpable sense of adventure. Biking, hiking, boating, whale watching… experience it all on this culturally rich and unique North American vacation!

Why Travel with Backroads in Quebec

The Original Farm Had No Thermal Spa

Backroads is the only active travel company that stays at award-winning Hôtel Le Germain Charlevoix – a chic, contemporary take on the traditional country hotel that pays homage to the original settler's farm that once stood on the site. It's your exclusive home base for exploring the beautiful surrounding region, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve and longtime summer retreat for wealthy families arriving by train or yacht from the U.S. Northeast.

The Best Leaders in Quebec

Backroads has the best-qualified people to lead your trip in Quebec, and our guests back that up, rating our Trip Leaders an average of 9.75 out of 10 for all-around quality of performance. Get the facts (and no fluff) on how we recruit and develop the very best people for your trip.

We Know Our Neighbours Well

Backroads first headed up to Canada in 1980, when an older Trudeau was prime minister, and we've been exploring its spectacular landscapes ever since. Our leaders are Canadian and many are proud to make their homes in Quebec—where we offer more trips than any other active travel company and have spent many more years finding the best ones.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Quebec trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

More Leaders to Support You

On our Quebec trips we have an extra leader supporting you along the road and trail—for a total of three, compared to the industry standard two. So we can be in more places at once, giving personal attention to guests traveling at their own pace. Here's more on our Trip Leaders.

Kids Who Aren't Kids Anymore

Only Backroads offers active trips in Quebec designed for families with older teens and 20s. These trips are aimed at you and the amazingly grownup members of your clan—whether they're almost high school grads, already in college or further along. Find out more in this blog post.

Only the Best Hotels

On this trip featuring Premiere Hotels, you can count on the best lodgings Quebec has to offer. In fact, the hotels we've chosen in this region have higher retail room rates than those offered by any other active travel company—even when their trips cost more.

Our Superb Bikes Included

A great bike is obviously critical for a great multi-adventure trip; you don't want to gamble on one that's been sourced locally to trim costs. This trip features our acclaimed Backroads Custom Titanium bikes, expertly tuned and fitted, and included in your trip price. Learn why our titanium bikes are ideal for most riders.

Your Trip Will Run. Period.

Under our Book with Confidence policy, your Backroads trip will run even for a single family of three or four people, subject to a nominal extra fee. Or transfer to another trip, and we'll give you a credit. It's all part of our trademark commitment to treating guests with integrity, transparency and total accountability. Read all the details.

We Know Where We're Going

Tom Hale has been keeping Backroads on track, with one eye on the horizon, since 1979. His passion for active travel, and for ensuring the highest-quality travel experience, is evident in every detail we add to make a guest's trip unforgettable—and the fact he's right there in the office, making it happen. To hear Tom describe his vision, watch our video.
