Explore São Martinho do Porto, also called “Concha” because of its position along a shell-like-shaped bay • Savor a seafood lunch overlooking turquoise waters • Keep an eye out for 150-million-year-old ichnites, fossilized dinosaur footprints, as you hike along sandy paths to breathtaking natural lookouts • Test your balance surfing Nazaré’s legendary waves • Bike through thick pine forests overlooking the Atlantic sea • Relax in charming Alcobaça at our beautiful monastery-turned hotel.

Nights 1-2
Rest your head at a sumptuous hotel designed by architect Souto Moura and built inside of Mosteiro de Alcobaça, a World Heritage Site that stands as a masterpiece of Portuguese Gothic architecture. (pool, spa)

Day 3
Head east into one of Portugal’s best-kept secrets—the Dão wine region • Bike along a converted railway line, tracing the contours of the Dão River lined with lush greenery and timeworn hamlets • Stroll through the aristocratic village of Santar between elegant manor houses and resplendent gardens • Enjoy the atmosphere of our romantic Relais & Châteaux estate, then sit down to a gourmet dinner featuring creative local dishes.

Night 3
Adorned with original antiques, family portraits and hand-painted ceilings, this luxurious 17th-century estate is as stunning outside as it is within, encircled by ten acres of vineyards and eight acres of post-Renaissance gardens. A Relais & Châteaux member. (pool, spa)

Days 4-6
Tucked high above the Douro Valley, hike through a remote region full of pastoral hillsides, slate-roofed stone cottages and the occasional sheep-dotted pasture • Delight in a homemade lunch at a cozy home in Codeçal • Head into the heart of the Douro Valley and to our sumptuous hideaway perched above the river’s edge • Visit Sabrosa, a bustling town that once launched one of history’s greatest explorers, Ferdinand Magellan • Taste a variety of port wines at a revered wine estate • Set off in kayaks from the banks of the Douro and paddle through a sun dappled landscape of green and gold • Hike among sloping rows of vines, with weathered stone walls and the occasional whitewashed farmhouse peeking from the hills • After a leisurely final morning, end your trip in the colorful riverside city of Porto, an ideal place to continue your journey.

Nights 4-5
Surrounded by terraced hillsides and looking out onto the majestic Douro River, this former noble estate has been reimagined as a luxurious wine hotel with its own private cellar, working vineyards and award-winning bottles. (pool, spa)

We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
The slower pace, relaxed approach to life and old-world qualities in Portugal are some of the highlights of this spectacular region and are reflected in the hotels and restaurants on this trip. That said, service can lack a sense of urgency when compared with the service found in other parts of Europe. Additionally, while the hotels we’ve chosen are some of the finest in the country, they may seem a bit simpler than the Backroads European standard. The same can be said for Portuguese cuisine, which is traditionally a celebration of local flavors but is also bit more rustic than other places we visit in Europe.
Due to variable ocean tides and weather conditions, the day and time of activities may vary somewhat by departure. Rarely, an activity may be canceled because of bad weather and/or conditions. If this is the case, your leaders will have alternative options planned.
