Day 1
Meet in Athens, cradle of democracy and a bustling Balkan metropolis, before traveling into the countryside • Feast on classic Greek dishes at a rustic taverna • Bike rural roads through citrus orchards and across gullies waving with giant cane • Gaze on terraced mountainsides where ancient olive trees grow, then learn how the liquid gold is made in situ during a roadside visit • Spin alongside the blue waters of the Gulf of Argolis • Wander the dreamlike belvederes of our ultra-luxe seaside retreat.

Days 4-6
Brush-covered mountainsides alternate with stone villages under bougainvillea bowers as the Peloponnesian countryside unfolds beneath your wheels • Stop roadside at a winery to taste the modern vintages of one of the world’s oldest winemaking traditions • Dine on fresh seafood on a night out in the ancient island port town of Monemvasia • Unwind in our lodgings in fertile Agios Stefanos, where a garden-like landscape tumbles from the mountains down to a quiet shoreline • Compare the flavor profiles of different olive oils in a gourmet taste test • Bike to the island of Elafonisos for vistas of brilliant crystal-blue water lapping against white beaches.

This meticulously restored Byzantine mansion estate features spring-fed pools and centuries-old olive trees. (pool, spa)
What's Included

We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
To reach the Peloponnese Peninsula, you can expect to spend 3-4 hours on the road on Day 1 and Day 6 as we transfer to and from Athens. Although this is more shuttling than on a typical Backroads trip, we’ve included these transfers due to the lack of convenient options for traveling between Athens and the peninsula on your own.
Greek summers can be intense, with heat waves occasionally cresting above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. If your trip is in summer, come prepared for these conditions with moisture-wicking clothing, extra water bottles and your sense of flexibility (as we may occasionally try to start activities earlier in the morning to beat peak temperatures). Keep in mind that heat can make activities significantly more challenging.
In spring and fall, on the other hand, our guests are often surprised by the blustery, stormy and chilly conditions that are possible in the wild and mountainous Peloponnese. If your trip is during these times, pack layers for all types of weather—not just sun!
