Itinerary

Day 1 Tour the cobblestone streets of Stockholm's old town | Board a flight to the Swedish Lapland town of Kiruna and head to the village of Jukkasjärvi on the wild Torne River | Welcome to the Icehotel, created anew each year from snow and the river's ice by artists from around the globe.

Days 2-3 All aboard for a scenic train ride to Abisko National Park, a spectacular landscape with frozen lakes and rivers | Strapped into your snowshoes, hike along open mountain moors and through arctic birch forest, keeping an eye out for moose, reindeer and fox | Learn about Swedish culture, including fika, the tradition of sipping a coffee while having a chat | Visit the reindeer at Sámi Siida and learn about Sámi culture, an indigenous people who have lived with reindeer for millennia and have a fierce respect for sápmi (the land) | Cross into Finland and head to your private glass igloo where you're surrounded by a snowy display of beauty, and possibly the northern lights if the nights are clear.

Day 4 Snowshoe in Finland's Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, forging a trail above the tree line and through boreal forest | Pop into a kota (traditional Sámi hut) to warm your hands over the fire | Meet with the Shaman of Lake Jerisjärvi who weaves tales of gnomes and nature.

Days 5-6 Feel an adrenaline rush as you guide your team of huskies on a dog-sledding adventure| Walk over a frozen lake and alongside Kätkätunturi fell | A visit to Finnish Lapland wouldn't be complete without time in a sauna, a revered part of the culture | After your calming sauna, dare to take a plunge in the icy lake! | In Levi, transport yourself like a local—on your own kick-sled.

Get the Straight Talk about This Trip

We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

Internal Flight

On this trip we travel by plane to reach the exclusive hotels and activities this destination has to offer. We'll be flying commercially with Scandinavian Airlines aboard a narrow-body jet that seats 141 passengers.

Arctic Circle Unpredictability

Our journey through the Nordic Lapland regions is a magical winter adventure full of the planet's most remarkable natural treasures. We may experience partial polar nights where the sun only makes an appearance above the horizon for three to eight hours and the landscape reflects beautiful shades of blue and violet. Northern lights are an incredible natural phenomenon and as such, are unpredictable. The probability of sightings are affected by weather, the phase of the moon, and many other factors, so sightings are not guaranteed. What is predictable above the Arctic Circle is snow and below-freezing temperatures. Should such severe weather conditions occur, we'll be prepared with alternate activities.

Accommodations

We have the unique opportunity to stay at the world-famous Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden. We'll spend one night of our stay in a room hand-carved out of ice and snow—a one-of-a-kind art sculpture—where the temperature rests at 23 degrees Fahrenheit. You'll sleep in a thermal sleeping bag on a thick mattress covered in reindeer hides, curtains replace doors in the suites, restrooms are shared and your luggage will be stored in a private locker.

Shuttle Time

To access the best routes and most unique hotels in this expansive region across two countries, we've incorporated multiple shuttles and a train ride into your itinerary.
