When you find yourself this close to the Arctic Circle, you're likely far, far away from home! You've been transported to a winter wonderland where smoked reindeer and hot lingonberry juice are on the menu. Pristine and snowy landscapes amaze as you trek through Swedish and Finnish Lapland. And where else can you snuggle into a bedroom sculpted from ice and snow and gaze at the Northern Lights through the ceiling of your very own glass igloo?

Embark on a historic walking tour of Sigtuna, the oldest town in Sweden which dates to the 10th century and still retains much of its medieval charm | Board a flight to the Swedish Lapland town of Kiruna and head to the village of Jukkasjärvi on the wild Torne River | Welcome to the Icehotel, created anew each year from snow and the river's ice by artists from around the globe | Strap into your snowshoes and trek along the river | Discover Swedish culture, including fika, the tradition of sipping a coffee while having a chat | At the Sámi Siida outdoor exhibition learn about the Sámi indigenous people who have lived with reindeer for millennia and have a fierce respect for sápmi (the land).
Northern Sweden's otherworldly Icehotel boasts rooms whose walls, floor, ceiling and bed are made of ice. Each art suite has a unique theme, sculpted by artists each year from snow and the Torne River's ice.
In Kangos, we arrive in the remote village of Särkimukka—home to about 20 times more dogs than people | Snowshoe or cross-country ski beneath towering pines and pastel skies, venturing through a magical taiga forest | Cross into Finland and head to your private glass igloo, where you're surrounded by a snowy display of beauty, and possibly the northern lights if the nights are clear | Snowshoe in Finland's Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, forging a trail above the tree line and through boreal forest | Pop into a kota (traditional Sámi hut) to warm your hands over the fire.
Whether or not the northern lights come out to play, Levin Iglut's private glass domes are the perfect place to witness uninterrupted views anytime of day or night.
Feel an adrenaline rush as you guide your team of huskies on a dogsledding adventure | Walk over a frozen lake and alongside the Kätkätunturi fell | A visit to Finnish Lapland wouldn't be complete without time in a sauna, a revered part of the culture | After your calming sauna, dare to take a plunge in the icy lake! | Glide through the forest on a kick-sled to end your Lapland adventure.
This new boutique luxury hotel set in the heart of the famous Finnish resort of Levi features an aesthetic blending traditional Lappish and modern design. (pool, spa)

Every Backroads trip is designed to appeal to a wide variety of interests and fitness levels. Several routes and a range of levels are offered each day so you can choose how much or how little activity you want to do. Learn more about how we determine activity levels.
Snowshoeing is different to walking and hiking and takes more exertion. Snow conditions can add to the exertion level. Fresh or deep snow requires some agility and more effort and can make even the shorter options feel more challenging than expected. Our level ratings for snowshoeing are based on firm snow conditions.
We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
On this trip we travel by plane to reach the exclusive hotels and activities this destination has to offer. We'll be flying commercially with Scandinavian Airlines aboard a narrow-body jet that seats 141 passengers.
Our journey through the Nordic Lapland regions is a magical adventure full of the planet's most remarkable natural treasures. Northern lights are an incredible natural phenomenon and as such, are unpredictable. The probability of sightings are affected by weather, the phase of the moon and many other factors, so sightings are not guaranteed (our experience has been 50/50).
Luxury Lapland-style means modern, simple and uniquely appointed rooms. Please note that, due to the remoteness of our properties, breakfasts tend toward a local buffet-style affair and dinners are pre-ordered with limited-choice menus, which is simply a part of the cultural experience of Lapland.
To access the best routes and most unique hotels in this expansive region, we've incorporated multiple shuttles into your itinerary.
