Itinerary
Days 1-2
Local wranglers saddle up horses before you head into the backcountry, gaucho-style • Ride through alpine forest with views of vast Lake Nahuel Huapi, the namesake of the national park you’ll spend the week exploring • Cozy mountain hospitality and chic design combine at our serene woodland hotel • Climb to a soaring alpine box canyon where a delicate meadow above tree line is overshadowed by walls of granite • While adults tackle the high alpine world, kids embark on a kids-only hike accompanied by a Trip Leader, then try their hands at rock climbing • Stroll the rustic frontier village of Villa La Angostura, where artsy souvenirs and artisan ice cream tempt family members of all ages.
Nights 1-2
Surrounded by forest and gardens, this rustic-chic hotel full of exposed wood and broad windows feels like it brings a deep breath of nature inside. (pool, spa)
Days 3-4
Trek along the slopes of Cerro Villegas • Twisted rock formations and see-forever rangeland blasted by wind show off Patagonia’s rugged side • Take to white water rafts for a splash-filled ride down the Class II and III rapids of the Río Manso • Mountain hospitality awaits at our old-fashioned lodge overlooking Lake Mascardi • Gather alfresco for a classic Argentine-style asado, or cookout—as much a culinary experience as it is a social one.
Nights 3-4
A cozy hotel in the heart of Nahuel Huapi National Park where we’re welcomed with family-run hospitality on a bluff overlooking the lake.
Days 5-7
Venture high on the slopes of Cerro Otto, where vast views of the Lake District unfold at your feet • Have lunch at a remote mountain hut and hop a chairlift down into town • Kids make their own artisanal chocolate, continuing a Bariloche tradition that’s been passed down from the first German settlers • Meet up with sturdy hybrid bikes to cycle a mix of country byways and dirt roads along the shore of Lago Gutiérrez • Adults are invited to a brewery tour and beer tasting in Colonia Suiza, a frontier village whose whimsical rustic architecture leans into the heritage of its Swiss founders • Opt for an afternoon long option pedaling a section of the Circuito Chico, a world-renowned scenic route which ribbons high above the Lake District’s lakes • Tackle a morning hike to the summit of Cerro Campanario for a last view of the national park and its lakes.
Nights 5-6
Serenity reigns in this shade-dappled complex of suites and cabañas tucked between tall trees. Its location is perfect for fun in the woods, tucked at the foot of the Cerro Campanario chairlift and at the crossroads where the famous Circuito Chico bike route begins. (pool, spa)

We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
Our hikes through Patagonia’s captivating terrain are remote and often do not intersect with roads. Vehicles will get us to and from the trailheads, but the nature of these trails is such that we won’t see our vehicles along the route. Ample trail support in the form of water, snacks and encouragement is provided by your Backroads leaders and local guides.
Also be aware that our biking routes include sections of dirt roads with loose rocks and sand, as well as some more trafficked stretches. Of course, you’re always welcome to jump in the shuttle to avoid the busier or rougher sections of the route.
Trips with a small number of guests may be supported by one Backroads Trip Leader and a team of knowledgeable local guides. There will always be at least two people hiking on the trail with you.
