Itinerary

Days 1-2 Bike along the Adriatic Coast past traditional fishing villages and the ancient city of Egnazia | Turn your wheels inland and ride among fields of fennel and a sea of shimmery olive trees | Wander the sun-bleached fishing town of Polignano a Mare, with winding streets and limestone cliffs | Join a cooking demonstration and sommelier-led tasting of well-known Pugliese wines at a traditional masseria (fortified farmhouse).

Day 3 Explore Alberobello, a World Heritage site with 1,500 cone-roofed trulli, on a walking tour with a local guide and learn about these intriguing and unique structures | Ride rolling country roads through the fertile Val d'Itria | A mozzarella master in a typical trullo shows us how this cheese is made.

Day 4 A peaceful cycling route along country roads leads to Ostuni, a historic settlement crowned by a Gothic cathedral | Enjoy a refreshing espressino freddo in Cisternino, a captivating 7th-century town | Discover charming Monopoli while you stroll its seafront promenade and maze of narrow lanes.

Days 5-6 Journey to the World Heritage site of Matera | Humans inhabited the canyon's caves 9,000 years ago in what UNESCO calls “the most outstanding example of a troglodyte settlement in the Mediterranean” | Soak up the otherworldly feel of this ancient town, with its intriguing history and sublime views | Cap off your trip with a ride or a walk through Matera with a local expert.

Get the Straight Talk about This Trip

We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

Biking in Puglia

Roads in Puglia and most of southern Italy are not always as well maintained as those found up north. Although our routes are quiet and picturesque, you can expect some rough patches of road along the way. And believe it or not, litter can occasionally be part of the landscape, especially when approaching small villages. For most, these challenges are overpowered by the indelible beauty of Puglia's serene countryside and its warm hospitality.

Service Standards

The slower pace and relaxed approach to life in Puglia is one of the highlights of this spectacular region and is reflected in the hotels and restaurants on this trip. This said, service can lack a sense of urgency when compared with the service found in other parts of Europe. Because dining is an event unto itself here, our restaurants encourage you to slow down and enjoy a leisurely paced meal. Your best bet is to sit back, relax and soak in the Puglian way of life.

Accommodations

We stay one night at Sextantio le Grotte della Civita, an elegant and simple hotel set within prehistoric caves in the World Heritage cave dwelling site of Matera. Although the hotel offers all the modern amenities and comforts you can expect from a Premiere Hotel, the luxury rooms are quite literally caves with little natural light and unfinished stone surroundings. Rest assured that this hotel offers a truly unique experience and is well worth the stay.

Why Travel with Backroads in Puglia

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Puglia trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

A Second Van When You Need It

Backroads is the only active travel company providing two support vans in Puglia—because we know it's essential to ensure a truly great travel experience. It doubles our ability to be there when you need us to offer hydration, lighten your load or give you a lift if it's time to take a break. Read more on why two vans make all the difference.

The Best Leaders in Puglia

Backroads has the best-qualified people to lead your trip in Puglia, and our guests back that up, rating our Trip Leaders an average of 9.75 out of 10 for all-around quality of performance. Get the facts (and no fluff) on how we recruit and develop the very best people for your trip.

The Right Local Pairings

Our Trip Leaders combine deep local expertise with a firm grasp of North American expectations around quality of service. By the same token, we pair experienced Backroads leaders with local guides who know how to cater to your needs while cracking open the culture or natural history in ways that are meaningful, memorable and often magical.

We Speak the Language

If we told you many companies' leaders can't actually speak the language where they lead trips, you'd say incroyable... ridicolo... không the tha thú. At Backroads, fluency in the local language is a given. Find out more on the best leader recruitment, training and development in the business. (And by the way, that was "unforgivable" in Vietnamese.)

Great Bikes Included

Our custom-designed titanium bikes are best in class. From avid cyclists to easygoing riders, we believe that everyone deserves a seriously great bike to match their riding style. Learn more about our bike fleet.

Navigate Your Way in Puglia

Your ride comes equipped with a GPS device, preloaded with all the routes and route options for your trip. If you prefer to bring your own device, we also have downloadable GPS files and of course, our good old paper directions are always available. Read more on why our navigation options are the best.

We Live in the Neighborhood

Our Trip Leaders in Puglia live in the area and are deeply engaged in their communities, giving them unique inside knowledge they're happy to share in making your experience that much richer. They'll introduce you to people, customs and parts of town you'd likely never encounter on your own—and teach you a few local phrases to help break the ice.

Our Cultural Roots Run Deep

Thanks to our extensive connections in Puglia, Backroads takes you off the beaten track and deep into the region's culture in ways that traditional travel can never hope to do. We know the people and their customs, the legacy of art and architecture, the complex history and politic—and if we're not sure, our amazing local experts can fill in the blanks.

Quality You Can Measure

Since 1979, Backroads Founder and President Tom Hale has shown that staying #1 means constantly evaluating our performance using the best possible source of information: our guests. As we systematically analyze your feedback on our trip consultants, leaders, hotels, meals and on-trip activities, we never stop working to make a great company even better.

In Europe Since 1988

Backroads has been welcoming active travelers to Europe since before the Berlin Wall came down. Today it's virtually our second home. We know the perfect roads and trails, the most scenic valleys and hilltop towns, the hidden churches and gem-like museums, the up-and-coming vintners and celebrated chefs—and, of course, all the best places to stay.

More Leaders to Support You

On our Puglia trips we have an extra leader supporting you along the road—for a total of three, compared to the industry standard two. So we can be in more places at once, giving personal attention to guests traveling at their own pace. Here's more on our Trip Leaders.

Your Trip Will Run. Period.

Under our Book with Confidence policy, your Backroads trip will run even for one or two people (or a family of three or four), subject to a nominal extra fee. Or transfer to another trip, and we'll give you a credit. It's all part of our trademark commitment to treating guests with integrity, transparency and total accountability. Read all the details.
