What makes a Backroads Active Cruise different from a typical cruise?
Backroads Active Cruises combine the comfort of a small-ship cruise with immersive, daily active adventures led by Backroads Trip Leaders. Instead of just sightseeing, guests can bike, hike and explore destinations up close—often reaching places larger tour groups can’t.
You’ll return each day to your ship for a seamless, unpack-once experience, but your days are filled with meaningful connection to the destination, not just time on board.
What are the ships like on Active Cruises?
Our small ships and staterooms are some of the best on the rivers and seas, but they vary in size and are not nearly as spacious as traditional hotel rooms. Although the same high level of service is offered on all trips, amenities—like pools, common spaces and furnishings—and stateroom options may differ among ships. Select a departure date on your preferred trip’s web page for detailed descriptions of each ship, stateroom options and pricing.
Does Backroads share ships with other guests?
Yes, we share ships just like we would at a hotel. While cruising, we make good use of each ship’s common space. Once on shore, Backroads breaks completely away, leaving the standard bus tour/group shore excursion behind so you’re free to explore away from the crowds.
What is the balance between cruising time and shore activities?
Scheduled sailing and port times mean that some days allow more freedom on land while other days lean toward cruising to our next destination. But the trip as a whole will reflect a well-crafted balance of both—allowing you to actively explore the region while enjoying the gentle rhythms that only sailing can provide.
Can I participate in the ship’s excursions if I want to take a day off Backroads activities?
Of course! You're welcome to skip our shore adventures and join one of the ship’s activities instead. Some excursions are included in your trip price, while others carry a fee charged by the ship. Advance on-ship registration may also be required, so be sure to contact the Excursion Desk or Cruise Manager.
