We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
On Halong Bay, we use the nicest boats that allow us to visit the more exclusive parts of the bay. Our traditional Chinese-style junk boats are consistently comfortable and offer an appropriate number of cabins so we can have the boat all to ourselves.
As wonderfully fulfilling as travel is in Vietnam and Cambodia, it’s not always easy. Even something as simple as crossing the road can be a challenge (watch out for that scooter!). Our itineraries and Trip Leaders remove as many obstacles and inconveniences as possible, but we can’t remove haze and noise from the air, or replace poorly maintained paths—it’s all part of the experience here.
This trip includes travel on a commercial flight so that we can explore the best of your destination. Please note that flight schedules can change with little advance warning, which may require us to adjust our activities on a travel day. Your Trip Leaders will provide more details on any changes should this occur.

The Best Guides Ever
I had heard that Backroads takes care of everything but I've never had the experience of not having to lift a finger! I'm not sure if my Mom would be ashamed of me for not carrying my own bags or totally proud that I was so well accomodated. In particular, the guides were amazing. Our expert, passionate and super smart guides were Courtney and Faith. They did Backroads proud and more than that, their wonderful sensitivity and respect for the people and cultures we visited made me feel they were terrific ambassadors for America abroad.
Our trip far exceeded my expectations!
Our leaders and their knowledge of the countries, the routes we traveled, the places we stayed and what we learned and observed along the way was really outstanding...Literally the trip of a lifetime!
Magical trip to Viet Nam and Cambodia!
Thoroughly enjoyed our trip experiences with outstanding trip leaders Keith and Mitch. From sailing on HaLong Bay, to the lanterns of Hoi An and ending with sunrise at Angkor Wat - a truly magical visit. We highly recommend!

Great except for Day 4
My husband and I did the Vietnam Cambodia Bike trip in January of 2020. Our BACKROADS guides Trevor and Jason were amazing as well as the local guides Dragon in Vietnam and also the Cambodia one. The only hitch was Day 4 of biking. That route should be reconfigured. It was dangerous! I'm not talking about the uphill climb...we were prepared for that...but uphill for 6 miles sharing the road with busses, cars and motorcycles that were passing...coming into our lane was scary! It was difficult to appreciate the scenery as we were just focusing on staying safe. One biker bailed off his bike to the right off the road to avoid being hit by an oncoming SUV. Fortunately he was unharmed but was skittish to bike the next day and just stayed at the amazing Four Seasons Hotel. Once finishing the downhill climb into Danang the terror continued as we biked through a very busy city surrounded by motorcycles. We actually witnessed a cyclist being hit by an SUV. I was nervous to bike in the road across the bridge after seeing that and opted for the sidewalk across the bridge. Once we crossed the bridge out of Danang the ride was as expected on a Backroads Trip...roads "less traveled " which is what we were expecting all along! The rest of the trip was great! Be prepared for two half-days devoted to travel however. (DaNang to Hoi An...and Hoi An to Siem Reap). All of the Hotels, Hotel Staff and meals were wonderful! I just strongly feel Day 4 biking needs to be re-routed! On a positive note, we were amazed at how friendly and happy all of the Vietnamese and Cambodians were. We felt welcome everywhere we went and never felt unsafe anywhere. Even though we enjoyed the trip I am not recommending it because we have done others that we felt were better...especially for the price.
Backroads Guest Services
Thank you for taking the time to review your experience on the Vietnam & Cambodia trip. We’re so pleased to see that you enjoyed your leaders and local guides, and the trip overall. We appreciate your perspective on the Day 4 ride and are sorry that you found it more stressful than enjoyable. We recognize traffic on Vietnamese roads can be overwhelming. We choose to ride the Hai Van (Ocean Clouds) Pass on our trip as it’s the only road that connects our routes in the region, is off the main highway, and offers a climb and a view that has received positive reviews in past years. With your trip leading up to Tet, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, we are considering that traffic on the pass may have been busier than usual on this day, as this ride has often been a highlight for our guests. You’ve given us valuable feedback that we’ll certainly consider in the evolution of this trip's development.
Wonderful Experience in Viet Nam and Cambodia
Backroads did it again! Our Walking/Hiking Trip to Viet Nam and Cambodia met all our expectations, thanks to the detailed planning and seamless execution by the BR team. Hotel choices were exceptionally good and added to the overall enjoyable experience. BR leaders were fun to be with, very professional and personable. The hiking through villages, meeting with local people, visiting homes and markets etc was part of the success of the trip and provided a very memorable experiences. Thanks for making this - our fourth BR trip - so enjoyable and fulfilling.

As close to perfection as tour travel gets--honest!
Yes, this was as close to the perfect trip as I could imagine. Mariah & Marija & Nam & Sarom were super leaders and guides; they made the trip feel completely safe, educational, adventurous, and as much of a challenge as we could handle (I do know there were other participants who wished for a more strenuous itinerary, but I thought Backroads set clear expectations. I should also say that this was the best tour GROUP we have ever encountered; Backroads seems to attract the kinds of people we are happy to travel with.
Good for once in a lifetime or just an appetizer!
Having never been to Viet Nam or Cambodia, this itinerary seemed like a way to get a broad survey of the region and it certainly met and even exceeded those expectations. While both countries are developing, I'm afraid I under estimated the rate of change the region is experiencing. We felt welcomed and safe everywhere we went. The traditional way of life is still readily accessible for those interested in the old culture, however, modern infrastructure and amenities are becoming very common. The history is compelling. The food is amazing. And the people are lovely.

Amazing and intense trip - great itinerary, wonderful guides
This trip was wonderful. We learned so much about Vietnam and Cambodia, saw amazing and diverse sights, had great Backroads and local guides (knowledgeable, personable, professional), and enjoyed the company of a great tour group. We went on numerous walks through different areas in both countries and especially enjoyed the Old Town walk in Hanoi, village walks in Hue, Hoi An, and the fishing village on the Tonlee Sap Lake outside Siem Reap as well as the kayaking in Halong Bay. The hotels were excellent and, as usual for a Backroads trip, the food (including the ever-present snacks) was delicious. It was an outstanding experience in all ways.

Truly a trip to remember!!
Extremely well run. Our leaders and local guides were fantastic!! Loved getting off the beaten path and seeing how "real people" live and learning a lot about the cultures of Vietnam and Cambodia. The accommodations were excellent and the food was great. I highly recommend this trip!
