We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
In order to access the most scenic routes and significant points of interest on this trip, strategic shuttles are incorporated into several days of our itinerary. Most will be limited to an hour or so at a time, but on some days you can expect to spend a bit more time in the shuttle—though always to reach a worthwhile destination!
While our hotels are some of the finest in New Zealand, the relaxed Kiwi approach to service is reflected in the hotels on this trip—they are down-to-earth, without a lot of bells and whistles, and may not offer the level of customer service that you might be used to.
The lush green landscapes of New Zealand's West Coast makes this region unlike any other. Its climate can be as surprising as its terrain, with weather patterns and microclimates that may bring tropical storms and dramatic weather changes. (It's sometimes called the Wet Coast!) It could rain any day on your trip.

Great introduction to hiking on the South Island!
I just finished a 9-day hiking trip on the South Island of New Zealand. The Backroads' leaders were fantastic and made it a wonderful experience for everyone. The hiking routes, accommodations and food were all excellent. It was a totally enjoyable experience. I would actually consider doing the same trip again in a few years-it was so perfect!
Wonderful experience; memorable adventures.
I loved that this was an all women's group adventure. That is a such special way to travel; I have not traveled with such a large group since Girl Scouts. We had countless new places to discover and explore and many lovely moments shared on walks, over meals, and while traveling in the vans. I've created countless memories and learned much about the rain forests and preserves as well as some interesting glimpses of the Maori culture's belief on the importance of living in harmony with nature and New Zealand's steadfast partnering with that. I'm grateful I could experience all of this.

You must do this South Iskand, NZ, trip
This was my first Backroads trip, an all-women (14 of us plus three female group leaders) walking and hiking tour of South Island, NZ (from Christchurch to Queenstown). What a magical trip, not just because of the breathtaking views, but because of our kind, resourceful, fun and incredibly thoughtful guides!
