Canadian Rockies Walking & Hiking Tour

Banff & Yoho's Soaring Peaks & Emerald Lakes

  • Hike scenic trails in three Canadian national parks with dramatic vistas, beautiful waterways and lush landscapes
  • Walk through evergreen forests and flowering pastures to behold sensational glaciers and towering mountain peaks
  • Admire mountain reflections on Moraine Lake and Lake Louise, then hike to famous Plain of Six Glaciers Teahouse
  • Look for mountain goats, pikas and marmots—perhaps come face-to-face with one of them!

Think back to the staggering sight of Plain of Six Glaciers. The thunder of Takakkaw Falls. Remember the meadows alive with wildflowers. The impossible blues of Lake Louise and Moraine Lake. In those brief seconds before you go back to real life, you'll realize your Canadian Rockies experience never really ends.

Canadian Rockies Walking Tour Map

Itinerary

Day 1 Travel from Banff to Kootenay, crossing a vast wildfire burn area where hardy pink fireweed and yellow columbine herald signs of new growth | Venture into a hanging valley for a view of stunning Stanley Glacier.

Day 2 A forest trail carpeted with buttercups and bunchberry takes you to milky-blue Sherbrooke Lake, the largest backcountry glacial lake in Yoho National Park | Climb to Paget Lookout for sublime views of pristine glaciers and soaring peaks.

Day 3 Walk through evergreen forests and blooming meadows to sensational views of the Daly Glacier and Yoho Valley | Standing in awe before Canada's second-highest waterfall, it all makes sense—Takakkaw is Cree for “it is magnificent” | Walk along the shore of aptly named Emerald Lake.

Day 4 Climb to one of Banff National Park's most stunning alpine pastures, alive with wildflowers and wildlife | Soak up views of the glistening Crowfoot Glacier and beautiful Helen Lake | Come evening, relax at our elegant hotel.

Days 5-6 Admire the jewel-like colors of Lake Louise and Moraine Lake | Switchbacks lead to breathtaking Larch Valley and views of Wenkchemna Peak | Commune with mountain goats, pikas and Clark's nutcrackers | Hike the classic route from world-renowned Lake Louise to the historic Plain of Six Glaciers Teahouse.

This was a walking/hiking trip in the Canadian Rockies. The hikes were challenging but took us to beautiful places and we got to see landscapes that are hidden from the typical tourist sites. Our guides were wonderful and our accommodations were lovely.

An amazing overall experience right from the get go. As soon as we were greeted, we knew we were going to have an amazing time. Immediately we felt a sense of a high level of organization, professionalism and confidence. Essentially, we knew we just had to show up and that everything to the smallest detail had been taken care of and all we had to do was enjoy.

Comments about Canadian Rockies Walking & Hiking Tour:

Once again, Backroads provided the perfect vacation for someone like me who is looking for an adventure but doesn't have the resources or the time to research and put together an enjoyable and stress fee trip. I knew what to expect and Backroads delivered. What was above and beyond my expectations were the group leaders, Ken and Carolina. They were charismatic and knowledgable about our surroundings and such a joy to be around. But more importantly, they always made me feel safe so that I had the confidence to challenge and push myself. I felt like that they always had my back. They are extraordinarily perceptive of people's strengths and how to gently encourage them to reach a little higher. I got to see a lot of beautiful sights (I've never seen a glacier or an avalanche or a live "pikachu" before) but the greatest gift I received on this trip was the satisfaction of accomplishing the impossible, thanks to my leaders who provided the support to get me there.

Comments about Canadian Rockies Walking & Hiking Tour:

This truly was the best vacation that I've ever taken! The attention to detail was tremendous. The route was great (many thanks to the designer of the trip!) and I loved every step of the way, even through rain, snow and sleet! The wonderful energy of our two leaders was the icing on the cake - they were so very wonderful! Cindy and Karly enriched my experience so much!! I am so thankful to have had these two talented and intelligent women as our trip leaders! We were so fortunate to have the wonderful group of people too! Just a wonderful experience and I can't wait for my next trip with Backroads!

Canadian Rockies + Backroads = Exceptional Experience!

Comments about Canadian Rockies Walking & Hiking Tour:

This trip was exceptional. The beauty of the Canadian Rockies was the star and it was supported by two incredible trip leaders, lovely inns, terrific food, and interesting fellow hikers. Yosh and Kenny made us feel like we were guests in their own back yard. They knew the area so well and seemed to genuinely enjoy sharing information and making us feel at home. I will be doing many more trips with Backroads and I have already recommended it to others.

Why Travel with Backroads in Canadian Rockies

Up Where We Belong

One of the highlights of this Canadian Rockies adventure is your stay at the Post Hotel & Spa in Lake Louise, the renowned Relais & Châteaux lodge that's hosted Backroads guests for more than 35 years. You can count on a warm welcome from the hotel's Swiss-born owners: André Schwarz, a renowned ski instructor, has enjoyed several Backroads trips, while his brother George is a restaurateur who's built one of the finest wine cellars in Canada.

The Peaks Are as High as Ever

We’ve exploring these mountains for more than three decades, and many of us now live among them. Backroads Regional Manager Alison Iles, who raised her kids in Banff, not only designed many of our trips but has also served on park development committees and chaired both the Interpretive Guides Association and the Heritage Tourism Association. Having helped set the standards for all travel in the region, she knows how to ensure our trips exceed all expectations.

We Live in the Neighborhood

Our Trip Leaders in Canadian Rockies live in the area and are deeply engaged in their communities, giving them unique inside knowledge they're happy to share in making your experience that much richer. They'll introduce you to people, customs and parts of town you'd likely never encounter on your own—and teach you a few local phrases to help break the ice.

A Variety of Routes Each Day

In Canadian Rockies you head off each morning after choosing among several expertly designed routes—all with detailed directions, mileage and shuttle options. Unlike trips with one fixed daily route (or worse, one guide that everyone's obliged to follow), you're free to enjoy the best of the region at your pace, stopping wherever you want to explore further.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Canadian Rockies trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

More Leaders to Support You

On our Canadian Rockies trips we have an extra leader supporting you along the trail—for a total of three, compared to the industry standard two. So we can be in more places at once, giving personal attention to guests traveling at their own pace. Here's more on our Trip Leaders.

Quality You Can Measure

Since 1979, Backroads Founder and President Tom Hale has shown that staying #1 means constantly evaluating our performance using the best possible source of information: our guests. As we systematically analyze your feedback on our trip consultants, leaders, hotels, meals and on-trip activities, we never stop working to make a great company even better.

We Know Our Neighbours Well

Backroads first headed up to Canada in 1980, when an older Trudeau was prime minister, and we've been exploring its spectacular landscapes ever since. Our leaders are Canadian and many are proud to make their homes in Canadian Rockies—where we offer more trips than any other active travel company and have spent many more years finding the best ones.

Your Trip Will Run. Period.

Under our Book with Confidence policy, your Backroads trip will run even for one or two people (or a family of three or four), subject to a nominal extra fee. Or transfer to another trip, and we'll give you a credit. It's all part of our trademark commitment to treating guests with integrity, transparency and total accountability. Read all the details.

We've Set the Standard

For nearly four decades we've worked to earn and maintain our right to call Backroads the world's #1 active travel company. In pursuing that vision on behalf of our guests, we believe we've set the standard for our industry—captured in the Backroads Quality Guide, which clearly sets out the benchmarks of excellence, choice and support that we live by

We Know Where We're Going

Tom Hale has been keeping Backroads on track, with one eye on the horizon, since 1979. His passion for active travel, and for ensuring the highest-quality travel experience, is evident in every detail we add to make a guest's trip unforgettable—and the fact he's right there in the office, making it happen. To hear Tom describe his vision, watch our video.
