We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
Some hotels and restaurants we visit see few Western travelers and therefore lack many Western-style services. The leisurely service found in neighborhood restaurants and the limited supply of beer can all be appreciated as part of the journey.
Bhutan is a remote corner of the world where ancient culture, traditions and religion are still the deep-rooted cornerstones of everyday life. That said, modern Bhutan is not always the Shangri-la depicted in glossy travel magazines. Rather, it’s a developing country, where the scenes of poverty, trash and pollution can be jarring. And yet, the beauty of the people, the culture and the landscape shine through. Our itineraries and Trip Leaders remove as many obstacles and inconveniences as possible, but we can’t remove haze and noise from the air, or replace a poorly maintained road or trail—it’s all part of the experience here!
We ordinarily staff our trips with three leaders: two leaders out on the trail offering support—allowing everyone to have the experience they want, whether it’s an easygoing interpretative walk or a rigorous hike—while the third leader moves the van from trailhead to trail end. This trip is a little different in that our routes are a combination of loop hikes and out-and-back trails that begin and end in the same location. This means that you’ll still have the same two leaders providing excellent trail support without the need for a third leader to move the van.
This trip includes travel on a commercial flight so that we can explore the best of your destination. Please note that flight schedules can change with little advance warning, which may require us to adjust our activities on a travel day. Your Trip Leaders will provide more details on any changes should this occur.

Exceptional in every way
This trip is one you will think about long after it is over. The people, the culture, the terrain, the leaders and fellow travelers were all exceptional. I will not be able to capture it in words, but I can say this: just go. The trip leaders were of the high quality I've come to expect from Backroads. They make it all work, and make it look easy. Very accommodating, intelligent, friendly, open.. Additionally, the Bhutanese leaders and drivers were phenomenal. We had two Bhutanese guides and two Bhutanese drivers, and all four were friendly, kind, fun, and always on point. What an incredibly high level of support - 6 people! There were no gaps in support at any time. Being a trip to a small country in Asia, it attracted very experienced travelers. There were no petty complaints or impatience. Everyone knew what they were doing. In fact, many of the travelers were continuing on to other countries in Asia - Nepal, Japan, Cambodia and Thailand. The hospitality shown by the Bhutanese people was truly beyond compare. So many people said "thank you for company to our country" - including small children who wanted nothing more than a smile from a stranger. Most travel is transformative at some level, but this trip was really remarkable in that regard. Learning about the history, culture, people and religion of Bhutan was truly special. Learning from Bhutanese people made it that much more impactful. Oh - yes, there was hiking! Some beautiful hikes. Rafting was a blast. Of course the most special hike is the climb to Tiger's Nest. Iconic. This was my second Women's trip with Backroads, 4th trip with them overall. Big fan of Backroads in general, but especially the Women's trips.
