Itinerary
Days 1-2
Kick things off in northern São Miguel with a walk along stunning coastal bluffs where seabirds wheel in the winds • Enjoy your first taste of Azorean fare—maybe limpets, a delicacy—at a family-owned restaurant • Roam the terraced hills of Europe’s oldest tea plantation • Explore the fumaroles of the Furnas Valley, home to more hot springs than anywhere else on the Continent, and skirt its lovely lake • Soak at our hotel’s indoor and outdoor geothermal pools.
Nights 1-2
Surrounded by flower-filled gardens, Octant Furnas is an impressive and modern sanctuary with multiple indoor and outdoor thermal pools. (pool, spa)
Day 3
Admire the spectacular Sete Cidades—linked calderas filled with emerald and sapphire waters—from two iconic overlooks • Pass through woods filled with giant ferns and pom-pom blossoms of pink, blue and violet hydrangeas • Explore the village of Sete Cidades, at the calderas’ base, where you can admire the surrounding 1,500-foot-high crater walls • Discover vibrant Ponta Delgada, established in 1499 and now the island’s largest city and capital.
Night 3
A cheery, refined 19th-century estate overlooking both the Atlantic and historic town, with almost four acres of lawns, grand ficus trees and bright flowers. A proper blend of Old World style, modern amenities and bright environs. (pool)
Days 4-6
Hop a quick flight to Terceira and shuttle to a local winery for a tasting and delicious lunch • Walk through volcanic vineyards, the source of famed Vinho Verdelho • Find yourself forest-bathing in misty, fragrant woods of tangled laurel and cedar • Enjoy the Azores’ best birdwatching, plus views of the neighboring islands and possibly spouting sperm whales • Sample home-cooked specialties like chouriço and sour pudding • Tour the red-tile-roofed town of Angra do Heroísmo, a UNESCO city with a heralded international maritime history.
Nights 4-5
Perfectly positioned in the heart of this UNESCO World Heritage town, Travel + Leisure calls this new hotel “stylish” and “unique.” Lounge poolside beneath a fringed umbrella. Peruse the bar’s long list of Terceiran wines, teas and signature cocktails. Or pop down to witness the bustle at the nearby marina. (pools, spa)
