Get the Straight Talk about This Trip
We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
Flights
On this trip, we occasionally travel by 12–17-passenger turboprop plane to reach the exclusive hotels and activities this destination has to offer.
Accommodations
We stay one night at Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp, a comfortable property located on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. By staying in this ideal location, we'll spend less time driving to the crater and will be among the first visitors in the crater in the morning, when wildlife viewing is optimal. The private tents have simple ensuite bathrooms complete with the quintessential bucket shower experience and electricity, but their canvas walls and doors means sounds may carry from other tents nearby...the perfect way to doze off while listening to the peaceful sounds of the African night.
Biking in an Emerging World
Your journey through Tanzania will probably be unlike anything you've experienced. The people you'll meet and places you'll visit will likely stay with you for a very long time—especially if you've got a lot of memory for your camera, so be sure to come prepared! As wonderfully fulfilling as travel is in this country, it's not always easy. Even something as simple as crossing the road can be a challenge. Keep in mind that this is a developing country. And yet, the beauty of the people, culture and landscape shines through, making for an exotic experience that's completely worthwhile.Plus, our itineraries and Trip Leaders remove as many obstacles and inconveniences as possible, making your next extraordinary encounter always within reach. If you can be flexible and approach the region with a curious mind and good humor, you'll enjoy your trip to the fullest.Pedaling a bicycle on rural roads in Africa is both a physical and cultural adventure that requires quick thinking, patience and humor (watch out for that motorbike, cow or zebra!) Due to the less than ideal and ever-changing cycling conditions on this trip, Backroads provides specially fitted mountain bikes with touring tires and upright handlebars to maximize your comfort and control.
Why Travel with Backroads in Tanzania
Get the Most Out of Each Day
Coordinating multiple activities throughout a single day can be tricky, but with Backroads you'll never know it. When you explore Tanzania with us, you switch activities seamlessly without missing a beat. We invented the multi-adventure concept, and we're constantly adding new dimensions and fine-tuning the experience to make it even more enjoyable.
The Best Leaders in Tanzania

Only the Best Hotels
On this trip featuring Premiere Hotels, you can count on the best lodgings Tanzania has to offer. In fact, the hotels we've chosen in this region have higher retail room rates than those offered by any other active travel company—even when their trips cost more.
We Stand Behind Our Trips
Most companies' trips in Tanzania are run by local operators. At Backroads we manage our own trips; we would never subcontract your precious vacation to a third party. So as you enjoy the support of your seasoned Trip Leaders, along with our expert local guides and drivers, you have the confidence of knowing we're with you every step of the way.
We've Set the Standard
For nearly four decades we've worked to earn and maintain our right to call Backroads the world's #1 active travel company. In pursuing that vision on behalf of our guests, we believe we've set the standard for our industry—captured in the Backroads Quality Guide, which clearly sets out the benchmarks of excellence, choice and support that we live by
Quality You Can Measure
Since 1979, Backroads Founder and President Tom Hale has shown that staying #1 means constantly evaluating our performance using the best possible source of information: our guests. As we systematically analyze your feedback on our trip consultants, leaders, hotels, meals and on-trip activities, we never stop working to make a great company even better.
We Know Where We're Going
Tom Hale has been keeping Backroads on track, with one eye on the horizon, since 1979. His passion for active travel, and for ensuring the highest-quality travel experience, is evident in every detail we add to make a guest's trip unforgettable—and the fact he's right there in the office, making it happen. To hear Tom describe his vision, watch our video.
The Right Local Pairings
Our Trip Leaders combine deep local expertise with a firm grasp of North American expectations around quality of service. By the same token, we pair experienced Backroads leaders with local guides who know how to cater to your needs while cracking open the culture or natural history in ways that are meaningful, memorable and often magical.
We Invented the Multi-Adventure Trip
After more than 30 years of creating Backroads Multi-Adventures, our trip designers know how to blend the perfect balance of biking and hiking with other activities to showcase the best of a region. And then they arrange the seamless transitions that would be so hard to orchestrate on your own—adding dimensions to your trip that are exciting, inspiring and just plain fun.
