Man and two people pointing at an empty valley

Days 1-2

Description

Climb past wind-gnarled cypresses and through lush groves of southern beeches on the slopes of Cerro Benítez for an introduction to the vast vistas of Patagonia • Settle into a rustic-chic working estancia (ranch) built on the sweeping range by 19th-century English homesteaders • A local hiking guide points out the rock formations that flabbergasted early European explorers as we trek the remote valley of the Las Chinas River • Saddle up for a horseback ride among the 186-square-mile property of our estancia • Watch out for wild horses, guanacos (the llama’s wild ancestor) and the massive wingspan of soaring Andean condors.

Large mountains with a group of people walking on a smaller mountain

Days 3-4

Description

Set off on trails into Torres del Paine National Park, hiking through high-mountain rain forest and gnarled Nothofagus trees • Climb to a viewpoint of imposing Lago Sarmiento, which stretches into the distance where the pampas meet the peaks, and to the electric-blue hanging lake of Laguna Inge • Choose between the iconic Base Torres hike—an epic climb that takes you to the foot of the Torres del Paine and their nameless reflecting pool—or a day of small a la carte hikes to waterfalls, canyons frequented by dainty guanacos and a picnic by a lake • Feeling like a speck at the feet of some of nature’s most supersized scenery is a unique sensation of awe • Learn how to make Patagonia’s signature drink, the calafate sour, which adds an alpine twist to the classic pisco sour with the use of wild calafate berries • Hike sections of the park’s most renowned backpacking circuit, the W Trek.
