Itinerary

Days 1-3 Hike in Vatnajökull National Park, shaped over millennia by volcanic eruptions, glacial runoff and rushing rivers | By Zodiac boat, explore Fjallsárlón, a frigid lagoon with an iceberg “sculpture garden” in its silty waters | Trek to Svartifoss (Black Falls), a stunning cascade pouring from hexagonal lava columns | Ride in a tractor-pulled hay cart and explore the seabird sanctuary in the secluded Cape of Ingólfshöfdi | Strap on crampons and trek over a dramatic glacier in Skaftafell National Park, admired for its ice formations, water caldrons and pinnacles.

Day 4 Hop aboard a super jeep for a drive across rocky lava beds, glacial outflows and rivers near Katla Volcano | Discover Thórsmörk where lime-hued hillsides, snowy mountains and wildflowers create an alpine oasis at the end of the Laugavegur Trail | Hike from bizarre rock formations and canyons to beautiful viewpoints found above a vibrant green wonderland.

Days 5-6 Venture into the realm of bubbling mud pools and thermal rivers as you set out on two wheels through the rolling terrain around Lake Thingvallavatn | This beautiful and protected national shrine is the largest natural lake in Iceland | Walk in Thingvellir National Park, a World Heritage site and symbolic heart of the Icelandic nation | Forty percent of all local flora can be found here, though nothing is taller than a dwarf birch! | Set off on a hike across a stunning steaming valley leading to a gradual climb through the Hengill geothermal area.

Get the Straight Talk about This Trip

We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

Climate & Itinerary Changes

The combination of Iceland's prolific waterfalls, vast icefields, vibrant green landscape and warm ocean currents makes this island like no other place in the world. The island's climate can be as surprising as its terrain, with weather patterns and microclimates that can bring sun, wind, fog, sleet, rain and snow all in the same day (or hour!). Please be sure to bring warm layers and waterproof gear for every day of the trip. In addition, the fluctuating weather might result in flight and mid-trip itinerary changes, but rest assured your Backroads Trip Leaders are always prepared to make necessary adjustments to ensure a great trip while keeping safety the top priority.

Accommodations & Meals

Luxury Iceland style usually means modern, simple and nicely appointed buildings that prioritize location and views over plush amenities or landscaping. Please note that, due to the remoteness of our properties, dinners tend toward a local buffet-style affair and limited-choice menus, which is simply a part of the cultural experience of Iceland.

Internal Flight

On this trip we travel by air to reach the exclusive hotels and activities this destination has to offer. We'll be flying on a charter flight with Eagle Air aboard a turboprop plane that seats 19 passengers.

Why Travel with Backroads in Iceland

A Variety of Routes Each Day

In Iceland you head off each morning after choosing among several expertly designed routes—all with detailed directions, mileage and shuttle options. Unlike trips with one fixed daily route (or worse, one guide that everyone's obliged to follow), you're free to enjoy the best of the region at your pace, stopping wherever you want to explore further.

Get the Most Out of Each Day

Coordinating multiple activities throughout a single day can be tricky, but with Backroads you'll never know it. When you explore Iceland with us, you switch activities seamlessly without missing a beat. We invented the multi-adventure concept, and we're constantly adding new dimensions and fine-tuning the experience to make it even more enjoyable.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Iceland trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

More Leaders to Support You

On our Iceland trips we have an extra leader supporting you along the road and trail—for a total of three, compared to the industry standard two. So we can be in more places at once, giving personal attention to guests traveling at their own pace. Here's more on our Trip Leaders.

The Best Leaders in Iceland

Backroads has the best-qualified people to lead your trip in Iceland, and our guests back that up, rating our Trip Leaders an average of 9.75 out of 10 for all-around quality of performance. Get the facts (and no fluff) on how we recruit and develop the very best people for your trip.

Experts with Secrets to Share

In choosing the ideal experts to enrich your travel experience, we look for people with a wealth of local knowledge, but also the ability to convey their insights in English. Too often travelers find themselves smiling politely, not quite understanding what they're being told. Our experts share intriguing facts, anecdotes and inside stories that stay with you forever.

Quality You Can Measure

Since 1979, Backroads Founder and President Tom Hale has shown that staying #1 means constantly evaluating our performance using the best possible source of information: our guests. As we systematically analyze your feedback on our trip consultants, leaders, hotels, meals and on-trip activities, we never stop working to make a great company even better.

We Invented the Multi-Adventure Trip

After more than 30 years of creating Backroads Multi-Adventures, our trip designers know how to blend the perfect balance of biking and hiking with other activities to showcase the best of a region. And then they arrange the seamless transitions that would be so hard to orchestrate on your own—adding dimensions to your trip that are exciting, inspiring and just plain fun.
