Itinerary

Days 1-3 1-3 Hike in Vatnajökull National Park, shaped over millennia by volcanic eruptions, glacial runoff and rushing rivers | By Zodiac boat, explore Fjallsárlón lagoon with an iceberg “sculpture garden” in its silty waters | Trek to Svartifoss (black falls), a stunning cascade pouring from hexagonal lava columns | Strap on crampons and trek over a dramatic glacier in Skaftafell National Park, admired for its ice formations, water caldrons and pinnacles.

Day 4 Hop aboard a “super jeep” for a drive across rocky lava beds, glacial outflows and rivers near Katla Volcano | Discover Thórsmörk, an alpine oasis of lime-hued hillsides, caves, snowy mountains and wildflowers | Hike from bizarre rock formations and canyons to beautiful viewpoints | Explore a vibrant green wonderland featuring caves, icy peaks and glacial streams.

Days 5-6 Venture into the realm of bubbling mud pools and thermal rivers as you set out on two wheels through the rolling terrain around Lake Thingvallavatn | This beautiful and protected national shrine is the largest natural lake in Iceland | Walk in Thingvellir National Park, a World Heritage site and symbolic heart of the Icelandic nation | Forty percent of all local flora can be found here, though nothing is taller than a dwarf birch! | Set off on a hike across a stunning steaming valley leading to a gradual climb through the Hengill Geothermal area.

This was the first multi-sport trip we have taken with Backroads. I really liked the variety.

Climate & Itinerary Changes
The combination of Iceland's prolific waterfalls, vast icefields, vibrant green landscape and warm ocean currents makes this island like no other place in the world. The island's climate can be as surprising as its terrain, with weather patterns and microclimates that can bring sun, wind, fog, sleet, rain and snow all in the same day (or hour!). Please be sure to bring warm layers and waterproof gear for every day of the trip. In addition, the fluctuating weather might result in flight and mid-trip itinerary changes, but rest assured your Backroads Leaders are always prepared to make necessary adjustments to ensure a great trip while keeping safety the top priority.

Accommodations & Meals
Luxury Iceland style usually means modern, simple and nicely appointed buildings that prioritize location and views over plush amenities or landscaping. Please note that, due to the remoteness of our properties, dinners tend toward a local buffet-style affair and limited-choice menus, which is simply a part of the cultural experience of Iceland.

Great trip, best way to see Iceland

By

from Ambler, PA

Comments about Iceland Multi-Adventure Tour:

Well done. My first active vacation and I was skeptical, but you exceeded all my expectations by far. Trip leaders were superb, nothing was too much trouble for them. We had some challenging dietary restrictions in our group and they made it work without any issues. All three are a credit to your industry. See you in the Galapagos!!!

Experience Iceland!

By

from South Haven, Michigan

Comments about Iceland Multi-Adventure Tour:

Excellent experience! This particular trip allows you see the southern coast of Iceland with its many glaciers, waterfalls and panoramic views. The hikes are varied and the bike ride was challenging for me but beautiful and worth the effort. So much packed into 6 days but well worth it!

Excellent - exceeded expectations

By

from Philadelphia, PA

Comments about Iceland Multi-Adventure Tour:

The caliber of the guides, the make-up of the group, the landscape and locals, the food, the high level of professionalism from everyone we encountered throughout the trip made our Iceland Adventure a truly unforgettable, relaxing and completely enjoyable experience. Highly recommend for anyone wanting to see all the South Coast highlights in one shot. I had originally tried to plan this on my own but couldn't get into the hotels which Backroads had on this itinerary - would not have had the same experience as we saw some hidden gems we would not have known about; and we would not have had the chance to meet such terrific guides and wonderful people along the way!

Fire and ice

Comments about Iceland Multi-Adventure Tour:

Outstanding trip. Every day was a unique and wildly scenic adventure. The leaders were adorable, highly engaging, always organized, supportive and fun. Terrific hotels, Icelandic style. I wasn't a fan of the food anywhere in the country, but the staff at Backroads always made sure that I had options, without me ever asking. When asked which day was our favorite, it was difficult to respond - they were all fabulous!

Seniors in Iceland

By

from Steamboat Springs, CO

Comments about Iceland Multi-Adventure Tour:

We had relatively good weather, except for one day. Our trip leaders and support guides were terrific at accommodating our slightly slower pace as seniors--I am 68 and my husband is 75. We love the Backroads experience and the flexibility of Backroads trips. The hiking and geology on the Iceland trip are outstanding. The trip was well-designed and had multiple options each day to accomodate different abilities and interests. The guides provided additional flexibility when the weather required a change of plans and/or specific individuals had special needs.

Absolutely Beautiful

By

from Minneapolis, Minnesota

Comments about Iceland Multi-Adventure Tour:

Iceland was our 3rd Backroads trip and our first outside the US. The balance of activities was great and we were pleasantly surprised by many of the excursions since biking was not a big part of the trip. We loved how much of Iceland we were able to experience. The hotels were fantastic and the food was delicious. And, as always, the leaders made the trip. A memorable week!

Why Travel with Backroads in Iceland

We Know How to Say Eyjafjallajökull

Backroads consistently offers the best variety of active travel experiences in the land of fire and ice. Whether you choose this action-packed Multi-Adventure – which begins with a private charter flight to get you quickly to the trailhead – or one of our other Iceland trips, they're all backed by our deep local knowledge and the strong relationships we've built with the country's best hotels and restaurants.

A Variety of Routes Each Day

In Iceland you head off each morning after choosing among several expertly designed routes—all with detailed directions, mileage and shuttle options. Unlike trips with one fixed daily route (or worse, one guide that everyone's obliged to follow), you're free to enjoy the best of the region at your pace, stopping wherever you want to explore further.

Get the Most Out of Each Day

Coordinating multiple activities throughout a single day can be tricky, but with Backroads you'll never know it. When you explore Iceland with us, you switch activities seamlessly without missing a beat. We invented the multi-adventure concept, and we're constantly adding new dimensions and fine-tuning the experience to make it even more enjoyable.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Iceland trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

More Leaders to Support You

On our Iceland trips we have an extra leader supporting you along the road and trail—for a total of three, compared to the industry standard two. So we can be in more places at once, giving personal attention to guests traveling at their own pace. Here's more on our Trip Leaders.

The Best Leaders in Iceland

Backroads has the best-qualified people to lead your trip in Iceland, and our guests back that up, rating our Trip Leaders an average of 9.75 out of 10 for all-around quality of performance. Get the facts (and no fluff) on how we recruit and develop the very best people for your trip.

Experts with Secrets to Share

In choosing the ideal experts to enrich your travel experience, we look for people with a wealth of local knowledge, but also the ability to convey their insights in English. Too often travelers find themselves smiling politely, not quite understanding what they're being told. Our experts share intriguing facts, anecdotes and inside stories that stay with you forever.

Quality You Can Measure

Since 1979, Backroads Founder and President Tom Hale has shown that staying #1 means constantly evaluating our performance using the best possible source of information: our guests. As we systematically analyze your feedback on our trip consultants, leaders, hotels, meals and on-trip activities, we never stop working to make a great company even better.

We Invented the Multi-Adventure Trip

After more than 30 years of creating Backroads Multi-Adventures, our trip designers know how to blend the perfect balance of biking and hiking with other activities to showcase the best of a region. And then they arrange the seamless transitions that would be so hard to orchestrate on your own—adding dimensions to your trip that are exciting, inspiring and just plain fun.
