We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
While the accommodations on this trip reflect the natural surroundings of the national parks and provide unparalleled access to the best activities in the area, they are simpler than is typical of Backroads lodging. Many buildings date back to the turn of the century and have only been minimally renovated, in accordance with park regulations. Overall, the service standards can seem slow and casual when compared with the hospitality found on other Backroads trips. Please note that internet and cell phone service are extremely limited throughout the parks.
On this trip we hike in Coconino National Forest and the Grand Canyon. The National Park Service limits the size of all groups in these parks depending on the trail. Accordingly, you'll hike in small groups on designated trails with either a Backroads leader or local guide, depending on our group size and trail limitations. Our bike ride in Grand Canyon National Park will be facilitated by a local guiding team due to park regulations. We appreciate your cooperation with these requirements.
Arizona’s climate can be as varied and surprising as its terrain, with frost in the morning, baking heat in the afternoon and chilly temperatures in the evening. Snow is not uncommon in the early spring or late fall, and rain is always possible. Also, the changes in elevation as we travel are substantial, so you may experience a wide range of weather conditions in a single day. Please be prepared for a variety of climates, and be sure to bring warm layers, sun protection and rain gear. Winter storms or high water levels may result mid-trip itinerary changes, but rest assured your Trip Leaders are always prepared to make necessary adjustments to ensure a great trip.
