Route notes

The hiking and biking terrain on this trip ranges from level to rolling, with some steeper inclines and declines, including those of the Bright Angel Trail. Please note that the heat of the day can make the routes feel more challenging than the mileage and elevation may suggest. While the scenery is stunning, sections of the roads in southern Arizona can be rough and repaving is ongoing. Due to the remote nature of some of the roads, the condition of the shoulders can vary.

Operating under a Special Use Permit in the Coconino National Forest.

Straight talk

We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

Accommodations & Service Standards

While the accommodations on this trip reflect the natural surroundings of the national parks and provide unparalleled access to the best activities in the area, they are simpler than is typical of Backroads lodging. Many buildings date back to the turn of the century and have only been minimally renovated, in accordance with park regulations. Overall, the service standards can seem slow and casual when compared with the hospitality found on other Backroads trips. Please note that internet and cell phone service are extremely limited throughout the parks.

Hiking in Small Groups

On this trip we hike in Coconino National Forest and the Grand Canyon. The National Park Service limits the size of all groups in these parks depending on the trail. Accordingly, you'll hike in small groups with either a Backroads leader or local guide, depending on our group size and trail limitations. Please also be aware that your leaders won't be hiking with you on Bright Angel Trail due to National Park regulation. We appreciate your cooperation with the park's regulations.
