Itinerary

Day 1 Arriving in Pucón you can't miss the sight of smoking Villarica, the country's most active volcano | Descend toward the Earth's core on a private tour of Villarica's caves, passing otherworldly lava formations including impressive stalactites hanging overhead | Spectacular volcano and lake views unfold in Villarica National Park as we trek through the forest and up to a lava field dotted with craters.

Days 2-3 Bike from the small Mapuche village of Curarrehue into Villarica National Park | Breathtaking scenery unfolds as you ride by the Trancura River and gaze up at mighty Quetrupillán, Villarrica and Lanín Volcanoes | At Quillelhue Lagoon, spin to Argentina's border through stands of araucaria (monkey puzzle) trees | Get to know villagers over a fireside chat and hike with the tribe's lonko (chief) | Ride on the scenic Ruta de los Siete Lagos (Seven Lakes Route) tracing Lakes Calafquén and Panguipulli | Enter the magical rain forest of Huilo-Huilo Biological Reserve, one of the planet's most valued eco-regions and home to the world's smallest deer, the pudú.

Days 4-5 From our lodge in Huilo-Huilo, hike across the Fuy River and through rain forest in the company of unique wildlife, including the chucao bird and Darwin's frog | Arriving in the village of Puerto Fuy, spectacular Pirihueico Lake comes into view | Savor Chilean cuisine during a delectable wine-paired meal | Raft down Fuy River rapids under a dense canopy of coihue trees with views of the southern Patagonian Andes | Explore Parque Futangue, a private nature reserve on the edge of Ranco Lake with virgin forests, lava fields, lakes, waterfalls and rivers.

Days 6-7 Hike past turquoise waterfalls, footbridges and breathtaking lookouts to deep-blue Laguna Pitreño—jump in for a refreshing swim! | Continue on foot for 360-degree vistas of volcanoes, lakes and, on a clear day, the distant granite massifs of Argentina | Savor a delicious family-style Chilean asado (barbecue) | For your final adventure, kayak on the calm waters of picturesque Laguna Pichi.

Get the Straight Talk about This Trip

We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

Travel Time

In order to experience the full grandeur of Chile's Lakes and Volcanoes District, we spend more time shuttling on this trip than on a typical Backroads trip. This enables us to explore the incredible variety of ecosystems and scenery this region has to offer. Rest assured, the views from these shuttles are spectacular.

Why Travel with Backroads in Chile

The Best Leaders in Chile

Backroads has the best-qualified people to lead your trip in Chile, and our guests back that up, rating our Trip Leaders an average of 9.75 out of 10 for all-around quality of performance. Get the facts (and no fluff) on how we recruit and develop the very best people for your trip.

A Second Van When You Need It

Backroads is the only active travel company providing two support vans in Chile—because we know it's essential to ensure a truly great travel experience. It doubles our ability to be there when you need us to offer hydration, lighten your load or give you a lift if it's time to take a break. Read more on why two vans make all the difference.

A Variety of Routes Each Day

In Chile you head off each morning after choosing among several expertly designed routes—all with detailed directions, mileage and shuttle options. Unlike trips with one fixed daily route (or worse, one guide that everyone's obliged to follow), you're free to enjoy the best of the region at your pace, stopping wherever you want to explore further.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Chile trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

Our Superb Bikes Included

A great bike is obviously critical for a great multi-adventure trip; you don't want to gamble on one that's been sourced locally to trim costs. This trip features our acclaimed Backroads Custom Titanium bikes, expertly tuned and fitted, and included in your trip price. Learn why our titanium bikes are ideal for most riders.

Kids Who Aren't Kids Anymore

Only Backroads offers active trips in Chile designed for families with older teens and 20s. These trips are aimed at you and the amazingly grownup members of your clan—whether they're almost high school grads, already in college or further along. Find out more in this blog post.

Only the Best Hotels

On this trip featuring Premiere Hotels, you can count on the best lodgings Chile has to offer. In fact, the hotels we've chosen in this region have higher retail room rates than those offered by any other active travel company—even when their trips cost more.

Our Cultural Roots Run Deep

Thanks to our extensive connections in Chile, Backroads takes you off the beaten track and deep into the region's culture in ways that traditional travel can never hope to do. We know the people and their customs, the legacy of art and architecture, the complex history and politics – and if we're not sure, our amazing local experts can fill in the blanks.

We've Set the Standard

For nearly four decades we've worked to earn and maintain our right to call Backroads the world's #1 active travel company. In pursuing that vision on behalf of our guests, we believe we've set the standard for our industry—captured in the Backroads Quality Guide, which clearly sets out the benchmarks of excellence, choice and support that we live by

We Speak the Language

If we told you many companies' leaders can't actually speak the language where they lead trips, you'd say incroyable... ridicolo... không the tha thú. At Backroads, fluency in the local language is a given. Find out more on the best leader recruitment, training and development in the business. (And by the way, that was "unforgivable" in Vietnamese.)

We Know Where We're Going

Tom Hale has been keeping Backroads on track, with one eye on the horizon, since 1979. His passion for active travel, and for ensuring the highest-quality travel experience, is evident in every detail we add to make a guest's trip unforgettable—and the fact he's right there in the office, making it happen. To hear Tom describe his vision, watch our video.

Experts with Secrets to Share

In choosing the ideal experts to enrich your travel experience, we look for people with a wealth of local knowledge, but also the ability to convey their insights in English. Too often travelers find themselves smiling politely, not quite understanding what they're being told. Our experts share intriguing facts, anecdotes and inside stories that stay with you forever.

The Right Local Pairings

Our Trip Leaders combine deep local expertise with a firm grasp of North American expectations around quality of service. By the same token, we pair experienced Backroads leaders with local guides who know how to cater to your needs while cracking open the culture or natural history in ways that are meaningful, memorable and often magical.

We Invented the Multi-Adventure Trip

After more than 30 years of creating Backroads Multi-Adventures, our trip designers know how to blend the perfect balance of biking and hiking with other activities to showcase the best of a region. And then they arrange the seamless transitions that would be so hard to orchestrate on your own—adding dimensions to your trip that are exciting, inspiring and just plain fun.
