Hike to a hidden waterfall beneath the surreal silhouettes of araucaria (monkey puzzle) trees • Settle into our Bauhaus-style hotel, which has hosted the likes of Queen Elizabeth II • Catch some thrills as you paddle Class II-III rapids on the Trancura River, with a horizon of undulating karst mountains drifting by on either shore • Follow local guides and delve beneath the earth to explore a fascinating lava tube • Choose a welcoming local restaurant to dine in lakeside Pucón town.

Days 3-4
Learn how to make merkén spice and fried sopaipillas during a visit to the home of a local Mapuche woman, all while our hostess regales us with stories of indigenous Mapuche history • In Futrono, meet up with your bike to pedal a pastoral route between peaceful country farms in the shadows of towering cliffs • Settle into our exclusive digs deep within the private ecological reserve of Parque Futangue • Kayak on the electric-blue water of a rain forest lagoon and stop for a steaming yerba maté on a peaceful wilderness beach • Dine alfresco in a backcountry quincho, a uniquely Chilean indoor-outdoor kitchen • Hike through curtains of ferns and vines alongside a rushing stream, then climb to a viewpoint of the park • Get your hands floury in an empanada-making class paired with local wines.

Nights 3-4
Surrounded by gardens, meadows and lush forest, this remote lodge is set within the borders of a private reserve. (pool, spa)

Days 5-7
Cycle along the hilly western shore of Lago Ranco, where wild groves open up to stunning lake views • Freshen up post-ride with a dip in the lake, then dine on Chilean home cooking in a lakefront pavilion • Tackle an extra afternoon route alongside vast Lago Llanquihue, watched over by the perfectly symmetrical cones of active volcanoes • Hike the rocky slopes of the Osorno volcano, checking out remnants of a 2015 eruption and catching views of a towering waterfall • Learn how to make Chile’s signature libation, the pisco sour, before we toast to a colorful week of adventure • Squeeze in a morning ride on a bike path and a visit to a volcanic gorge full of waterfalls before catching our final shuttle to the airport.

We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
In order to experience the full grandeur of Chile’s lakes and volcanoes district, we spend more time shuttling on this trip than on a typical Backroads trip. This enables us to explore the incredible variety of ecosystems and scenery this region has to offer.
