Route notes

The biking terrain on this trip ranges from level to rolling; some of the walking and hiking routes include a few steep ascents and descents with significant elevation gain and loss. Please keep in mind that the higher elevations, occasional headwinds and possible extreme variations in weather and temperature can increase the perceived level of difficulty of our activities in the canyons. Most biking and hiking routes take place between 4,000 and 8,000 feet. Authorized Permittee of the National Park Service and National Forest.

Straight talk

We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

Accommodations–Glamping

At Under Canvas properties, we stay in large canvas-walled safari-style platform tents. Each is outfitted with a king-size bed including linens, a small fan, a small battery-operated lamp, a wood burning stove, plus an en suite bathroom with a hot shower, flushing toilet and sink. While our tents are comfortable, they do not have electricity or air-conditioning. Daytime can be hot but the tents' screened windows allow cool air to flow at night. Also, the property has limited cell reception and does not have Wi-Fi. Personal devices like cell phones can be charged via USB battery packs provided in each tent. With canvas walls and doors, sounds may carry from nearby tents and chirping crickets, so we suggest packing earplugs.

Interpretive Guides & Hiking Without Your Leaders

The National Park Service has many regulations on hiking. In Zion National Park they limit where you can hike when accompanied by your Backroads Trip Leaders. Your leaders will provide pre-walk briefings, maps and directions so you can explore certain trails on your own. In Bryce Canyon National Park, your leaders can hike with you but can't act as "interpretive guides." Throughout the trip, your leaders will give an orientation to the area's flora, fauna and terrain before your hikes. Thank you for helping us cooperate with each park's regulations.

Traffic

While Backroads strives to find roadways that are quiet and off the beaten track, some routes on this trip follow heavily trafficked roads. On Day 3 everyone shuttles to avoid a busier section of our route.
