Join us in the San Juan Islands.

Itinerary

Day 1
Kick off your journey in La Conner, a charming little town on the Swinomish Channel with beautiful boutiques and a relaxed country feel • Enjoy panoramic views of the Swinomish Channel during lunch on our lodge’s inviting wraparound porch • Bike through the fertile Skagit Valley, noted for its tulip and daffodil cultivation, with Mount Baker crowning the route.

Night 1
A comfortable hotel with private balconies and beautiful vistas of the boats and birdlife residing in Swinomish Channel.

Days 2-3
Island-hop by ferry and bike through stunningly diverse scenery, from conifer forests to farmland to seaports • Set sail for hilly Orcas Island, a tapestry of rural landscapes and the most mountainous island of the archipelago • Stop by artisan shops, where one-of-a-kind pieces are displayed among Douglas fir and western red cedar • On foot or two wheels in Moran State Park, make your way up Mount Constitution, the highest point in the San Juans—it's worth the climb! • Once at the top, enjoy the breathtaking panorama of islands, snow-covered Mount Baker, the Cascades and the Olympic Peninsula.

Nights 2-3
It's a short walk to the private beach and the shops and galleries of downtown from this retreat at the water's edge.

Days 4-6
Join a wildlife cruise with a naturalist—you may spot an orca! • Bike past secluded bays and driftwood beaches • Swap pedals for paddles on an optional sea-kayaking excursion near Roche Harbor and watch for otters and soaring eagles • Bicycle along the quiet roads on San Juan Island, the largest island in the archipelago • An easygoing route leads along the waterfront and through a forest—a great finale to the week.

Nights 4-5
Described by Andrew Harper as an "appealing contemporary island lodge affording exceptional views of the San Juan Channel."
What's Included

We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
To bring you to our favorite parts of this region, we make liberal use of ferry transfers, private boats and shuttles on this trip. You'll be on board a boat for many of the days on this trip as we island-hop like the locals do. Consider this an opportunity to view some spectacular marine scenery (and occasional wildlife!) while resting your legs in preparation for your next ride.
Please note that because our daily itineraries and activities are based on ferry departures that were accurate at the time of this printing, unexpected changes to the ferry schedules can result in alterations to the activities as described. We appreciate your understanding and flexibility if we must adjust our activities according to ferry departures, and assure you that any such changes will not affect the quality of your experience.
