Mix in rocky coasts, cozy hotels and the horns of ferry boats and you have a trip as rich in experiences as it is in crisp salty air.

Activity Level: 1-2

Our Dolce Tempo activities allow you to leisurely explore local hidden gems and to get away from the crowds, experiencing the essence of your location on your own terms and at your own pace. Easier than our other trips, but still wonderfully active, itinerary options typically include 2-4 hours of walking, e-biking or other excursions per day. On e-bike routes, our custom electric-assist bikes allow you to pedal effortlessly. Your trip is fully supported with dedicated Trip Leaders, vans, meticulously selected routes and downloadable GPS files available for use on your own device.

Route notes

The landscape of the San Juan Islands and Whidbey Island is characterized by constant rises and valleys. We walk on well-maintained trails, but you will encounter roots and rocks frequently. On e-bike routes, some sections of chip-sealed pavement may feel a bit rougher than riding on traditional asphalt roads.

Straight talk

We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

Ferry Transfers & Shuttles

To bring you to our favorite parts of this region, we make liberal use of ferry transfers, private boats and shuttles on this trip. You'll be on board a boat for many of the days on this trip as we island-hop like the locals do. Consider this an opportunity to view some spectacular marine scenery (and occasional wildlife!) while resting your legs in preparation for your next ride.

Please note that because our daily itineraries and activities are based on ferry departures that were accurate at the time of this printing, unexpected changes to the ferry schedules can result in alterations to the activities as described. We appreciate your understanding and flexibility if we must adjust our activities according to ferry departures, and assure you that any such changes will not affect the quality of your experience.
