Sweden to Denmark Family Bike Tour – Teens & Kids

Stockholm to Copenhagen—Coast, Castles & Countryside

  • Pedal easygoing terrain on a bike-friendly mix of country lanes, coastal roads and cycling paths
  • Behold the stunning seascape of the Stockholm archipelago, bathed in the midnight sun
  • Join other kids to try the historic sport of fencing while adults ride through Denmark's bucolic horse country
  • Marvel at magnificent castles, royal palaces and medieval landmarks set against the pristine beauty of the Baltic Sea

What would your family say to tasting fresh baked cinnamon buns in Sweden? And fencing on the grounds of a Danish castle? Riding along a fjord. Pedaling by red farmhouses and whimsical homes. Visiting castles whose names you can't pronounce. Meeting some of the world's happiest people. Maybe even being one of them. What would you say?

Stockholm to Copenhagen Bike Tour

Itinerary

Days 1-2 Explore the spectacular Stockholm archipelago by bike, private charter water taxi and ferry | Warm up with a loop ride on Färingsö Island in sparkling Lake Mälaren—just one of Sweden's 95,700 lakes | Pedal amid woodland, farms and villages to a historic palace for afternoon tea and pastries | Visit Drottningholm Palace, a resplendent 17th-century private residence to the Swedish royal family | Spin from island to island to the picturesque and historic town of Vaxholm.

Days 3-4 Feel the love in Copenhagen, one of the world's most bike-friendly cities | Ride through farmland and forests to catch a quick ferry across the Himmer Fjord to the island of Mörkö | Admire the rococo style and vast English gardens of Tullgarn Castle, the Swedish royal family's summer palace | Stroll the charming waterfront town of Trosa while kids try their hand at fishing | Spin along the quiet Baltic coastline before relaxing on the train to Copenhagen.

Days 5-6 Shimmering water, white-sand beaches and manor homes await on the Danish Riviera | Cruise on a bike path through forests near Klampenborg Royal Hunting Grounds | Narrow, winding roads lead past thatch-roofed houses and horse farms to Frederiksborg Slot, Scandinavia's largest Renaissance castle | Kids have fun at fencing on the grounds of a castle—en garde! | Copenhagen charms and inspires as you explore its historic sites on foot.

The trip far exceeded my expectations. The scenery was beautiful. The rides were developed so intelligently. I saw far more than I thought I would. I had never seen fields of flax in full flower. I won't forget that. The team leaders, Erik and Rafi were exceptional. They were professional, polished, and organized. They took care of every detail from preparing the bikes to making sure there was a bus or a ferry or a small boat to take us where we needed to be. They made all the lunch and dinner arrangements work flawlessly. They had a bountiful selection of snacks at every prearranged stop. Erik made a fabulous picnic with sandwiches, potato salad, and an open faced traditional Swedish sandwich. He even had a selection of pastries for desert. The beverage he selected for my son was so well matched-- my teenager downed almost a quart. Thank you for bringing these delightful young men into our lives. But the best part was an unexpected moment when I was trailing behind and talking with Rafi. I was trying to describe a policy issue related to farming and GMO seed. Not only did he know who I was talking about, Vandana Shiva, he knew her works better than I did. I never thought I'd be pedaling through Sweden having an academic discussion about agricultural practices in the world. Thank you especially for Rafi and Erik.

Access to the Best Rides

This trip is unique in that we stay right in the heart of two stunning (and bustling) cities—Stockholm and Copenhagen. To access the very best biking routes, we'll often bypass busy roads and traffic by starting and ending our bike rides with strategic shuttles via bus, van, boat and train. Between these two cities, we stay at casual Trosa Stadshotell & Spa in the seaside town of Trosa, Sweden, where tranquil countryside riding is right at our doorstep.

I Was Blown Away by the Backroads Experience

Sweden Denmark Itinerary is a Winner!

Comments about Sweden to Denmark Family Bike Tour Teens & Younger Siblings:

This new Sweden/Denmark itinerary is a winner. In one 30 minute span we were on a road through rolling farmlands which transitioned through fields of gorgeous purple lupine. The road continued into an evergreen forest that eventually put us on top of a ridge which looked down on a rolling valley so beautiful I couldn't adequately describe it in words. We are family of five with kids ages 8, 15 and 17. As you can imagine we are varied in our biking skills and interests. Backroads does a tremendous job of balancing the needs of everyone, keeping everyone challenged and engaged. We actually had a cruise booked for this year (after two Backroads trips we thought we would mix it up), but as the date approached the kids begged us to change the vacation to another Backroads trip. I am so glad we did and we are in the process of deciding which Backroads trip we want to do next. Also, our boys LOVED the Viking excursion with the boat trip. Backroads you continue to impress us. We can't wait for the next adventure.

Why Travel with Backroads in Sweden and Denmark

Help Your Kids and Teens Discover Scandinavian Culture

Both teens and younger travelers find plenty of diversions on this Scandinavian adventure, as they learn about Swedish and Danish culture and history, explore the Stockholm archipelago and learn from our local friends the wonders of the sea, how to make marzipan (which they may be willing to share with adults), take them fishing in secret spots and introduce them to the sport of fencing—en garde!

A Variety of Routes Each Day

In Sweden and Denmark you head off each morning after choosing among several expertly designed routes—all with detailed directions, mileage and shuttle options. Unlike trips with one fixed daily route (or worse, one guide that everyone's obliged to follow), you're free to enjoy the best of the region at your pace, stopping wherever you want to explore further.

The Best Leaders in Sweden and Denmark

Backroads has the best-qualified people to lead your trip in Sweden and Denmark, and our guests back that up, rating our Trip Leaders an average of 9.75 out of 10 for all-around quality of performance. Get the facts (and no fluff) on how we recruit and develop the very best people for your trip.

Great Bikes Included (or Upgrade)

Choose a Backroads Custom Titanium or Custom Electric Assist bike—both are included in your trip price. Maybe a Specialized carbon-fiber pro model is more your speed or go for double fun on a tandem. Our fleet is the best in active travel, so you don't have to roll the dice on this vital trip component. Learn why our titanium bikes are ideal for most riders. See the bike options for this trip.

Navigate Your Way in Sweden and Denmark

Your ride comes equipped with a Garmin Edge Explore 1000, the best bike-touring GPS device on the market. This is a Backroads exclusive, and it's included with your bike in Sweden and Denmark. If you prefer to bring your own device, we also have downloadable GPS files and of course, our good old paper directions are always available. Read more on why our navigation options are the best.

Plenty of Kids on Your Trip

It may be hard to imagine being on a family trip with no other families on it—but it happens regularly with some companies. On a Backroads Family Adventure there are typically several families on each departure, creating more opportunities for your kids to make new friends as they try fun things together – which is a big part of the experience.

Leaders Focused on Families

When everyone's together, there's lots going on; and when kids' and adults' priorities diverge, it can seem like two different trips. That's why our Family Adventures in Sweden and Denmark have three Trip Leaders—including a dedicated Kids Activity Expert who regularly takes younger travelers off to do their own thing. Other companies try to get by with two leaders; we step up and do it right. For more on our family focus, check this out.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Sweden and Denmark trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

In Europe Since 1988

Backroads has been welcoming active travelers to Europe since before the Berlin Wall came down. Today it's virtually our second home. We know the perfect roads and trails, the most scenic valleys and hilltop towns, the hidden churches and gem-like museums, the up-and-coming vintners and celebrated chefs—and, of course, all the best places to stay.

A Second Van When You Need It

Backroads is the only active travel company providing two support vans in Sweden and Denmark—because we know it's essential to ensure a truly great travel experience. It doubles our ability to be there when you need us to offer hydration, lighten your load or give you a lift if it's time to take a break. Read more on why two vans make all the difference.

Like You, We're Family Experts

At Backroads we've honed our expertise in active family travel over many years and a lot of trips. We host at least 20 times more family guests than any other active company, so we're constantly gaining new insights that make our trips even better. Detailed planning, behind-the scenes logistics, unrivaled support from three Trip Leaders—all backed by a team that proudly creates the kind of experiences we'd want to share with our own families.

Only the Best Hotels

On this trip featuring Premiere Hotels, you can count on the best lodgings Sweden and Denmark has to offer. In fact, the hotels we've chosen in this region have higher retail room rates than those offered by any other active travel company—even when their trips cost more.

Your Trip Will Run. Period.

Under our Book with Confidence policy, your Backroads trip will run even for a single family of three or four people, subject to a nominal extra fee. Or transfer to another trip, and we'll give you a credit. It's all part of our trademark commitment to treating guests with integrity, transparency and total accountability. Read all the details.
