Bali Bike Tour

Sacred Temples, Volcanoes & Rice Terraces

  • Enliven your senses in Bali, a world of striking natural beauty, captivating culture and exotic flavors
  • Connect with the  bustling local life as you two-wheel it through friendly rural communities
  • Snorkel among parrot fish and giant clams in Blue Lagoon, and a shipwreck home to hundreds of species of tropical fish
  • Relax at tropical beachside retreats, where you can take in the scene or soak up the rays, as you wish

Even as Bali joins the globalized world, it's easy to find inspiration here. Among terraced rice fields and exotic temples. In bustling market towns and on the slopes of volcanic mountains. And among some of the most welcoming people you'll ever have the pleasure of meeting. Come explore Bali with Backroads in a way that few travelers experience.

Bali Biking Map

Days 1-2 Set out on unforgettable rides past rice paddies, villages and sacred pools  |  Go behind the scenes with our longtime friend and local guide Wayan Narta  |  After spinning through rolling hills near Ubud, visit a mask maker to learn about this age-old art form  |  Raft the Ayung River, keeping an eye out for bright kingfishers and giant teak trees.

Day 3 Discover a culture steeped in Hindu spirituality and colorful mythology | Bike to the sacred Pura Pucak Sari temple and meet the resident priest | Pedal up and around Gunung Batur Volcano on your way to the quieter northern side of Bali | Dine alfresco to a soundtrack of live soothing rindik (bamboo xylophone).

Days 4-5 Spin along Bali's arid northeast coast, passing lava flows from Mount Agung's 1963 eruption | Snorkel amid the wreckage of the torpedoed Liberty, a haven for some 400 species of colorful reef fish | Return to shore on our brightly painted jukung boats and pedal back to the hotel for an afternoon of leisure.

Days 6-8 Meet locals in their art studios | Visit Tenganan, known for its beautiful double-ikat textiles | Prepare classic mie goreng in a private cooking class | Impressive volcanic mountains give way to a sandy beach on a descent past scenic rice terraces | Bike to a nearby community, passing small family compounds and the local school, where Balinese children do their morning exercises.

Big group but leaders were great.

This Premiere Inn Trip includes one Casual Inn night at Puri Bagus Lovina. The guest rooms are comfortable, but simpler than those of our other Balinese hotels. We've chosen this property because of its prime location on our biking route and its local charm.

Biking in an Emerging World

Bali is a beautiful destination with an enriching and unique culture, but it's also part of a rapidly developing country and travel here can be challenging.

Navigating Bali's crowded narrow city streets and rural roads on a bicycle is both a physical and cultural adventure that requires quick thinking, patience and humor (watch out for that scooter!). Though the route distances may be relatively short, the terrain, road conditions, heat and humidity, and the need to be alert can make activity more physically demanding.

While our trip emphasizes the idyllic Balinese serenity, it's impossible to fully avoid the bustling intersections and modern pace found here, complete with trucks, construction and litter—all serving as reminders that Bali is more than a peaceful Shangri-La; it's also a complex culture and economically evolving society.

Why Travel with Backroads in Bali

Escape from the Resort World

Circumnavigating this magical island by bike, you explore its less-known areas – ones that tourists trapped in resorts rarely get to experience – and meet a lot of friendly, fascinating people along the way. The Trip Expert who created our unique Backroads itinerary has spent more than 25 years exploring Bali. His routes nicely capture both the breathtaking natural beauty and the cultural nuances that make this such a remarkable place.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Bali trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

A Second Van When You Need It

Backroads is the only active travel company providing two support vans in Bali—because we know it's essential to ensure a truly great travel experience. It doubles our ability to be there when you need us to offer hydration, lighten your load or give you a lift if it's time to take a break. Read more on why two vans make all the difference.

We Stand Behind Our Trips

Most companies' trips in Bali are run by local operators. At Backroads we manage our own trips; we would never subcontract your precious vacation to a third party. So as you enjoy the support of your seasoned Trip Leaders, along with our expert local guides and drivers, you have the confidence of knowing we're with you every step of the way.

The Right Local Pairings

Our Trip Leaders combine deep local expertise with a firm grasp of North American expectations around quality of service. By the same token, we pair experienced Backroads leaders with local guides who know how to cater to your needs while cracking open the culture or natural history in ways that are meaningful, memorable and often magical.

Our Cultural Roots Run Deep

Thanks to our extensive connections in Bali, Backroads takes you off the beaten track and deep into the region's culture in ways that traditional travel can never hope to do. We know the people and their customs, the legacy of art and architecture, the complex history and politics – and if we're not sure, our amazing local experts can fill in the blanks.

Our Superb Bikes Included

A great bike is obviously critical for a great biking trip; you don't want to gamble on one that's been sourced locally to trim costs. This trip features our acclaimed Backroads Custom Titanium bikes, expertly tuned and fitted, and included in your trip price. Learn why our titanium bikes are ideal for most riders.

The Best Leaders in Bali

Backroads has the best-qualified people to lead your trip in Bali, and our guests back that up, rating our Trip Leaders an average of 9.75 out of 10 for all-around quality of performance. Get the facts (and no fluff) on how we recruit and develop the very best people for your trip.
