The road infrastructure in these former Soviet republics lags behind western Europe. In order to stay on the smoothest paved road surfaces available, we often cycle on main roads, which are shared with car traffic. On these largely flat sections through remote farmland and forest, you won’t find as much variety in landscape or as many quaint roadside stops as in some other parts of in Europe. In addition, small sections of our routes do include rough road conditions and stretches of gravel.

The Baltic states may be flat, but cycling routes here are shaped by the weather. Gusty winds can add a degree of challenge to even the flattest routes. In addition, rain is a regular feature of the climate year-round; our past guests have been glad to have packed extras like fully waterproof rain pants and waterproof shoe covers. Even if you hop in the shuttle as soon as there’s a turn in the weather, expect the occasional section of riding through adverse conditions—it’s just part of the adventure in this region surrounded by the stormy Baltic Sea.

Eateries and grocery stores in the Baltic states specialize in typical local fare, with alternatives not always readily available. While we and our vendors do our utmost to accommodate all dietary needs, know that if your restrictions are extensive, meals may be simple and lack variety. If this applies to you, please share with us prior to your trip what you are able to eat. And it’s never a bad idea to bring your favorite snack bars from home for quick energy on the road.

In order to show you the full breadth of the Baltic States and all three of its capital cities, there’s more shuttling built into each day of this trip than on the average Backroads itinerary. We’re confident that the extra time in the shuttle is a worthwhile tradeoff.
