I'm traveling internationally. Will I need a passport or visa for my trip?

International travel requires a valid passport. This includes travel to Canada. Visas are required for US citizens for travel to certain countries and must be arranged far in advance of departure (Backroads arranges group visas for Bhutan guests). The Travel Planner you will receive after reserving your Backroads trip contains details about required documentation. We recommend visiting the State Department website for country-specific requirements.

If you do not have a passport and/or need a visa, contact the appropriate consulate nearest you. Please note that some countries require your passport to be valid for a specified amount of time beyond your departure date (up to 6 months)—be sure to check the expiration date.

The United States State Department Passport Services offers online passport application and renewal information for US citizens

If you need your visa or passport expedited, Backroads guests receive exclusive savings on select services. Visit our guest site at VisaCentral for special pricing. Or you can contact VisaCentral at 866-788-1100. (Please be aware that reduced prices are only available for online orders.)

Guests who are citizens of countries other than the United States should contact the closest consulate for the country to which they’re planning to travel to determine if a visa is required.
