Hiking
There are so many incredible hikes in Iceland, and when you travel with Backroads, we show you the best of what a region has to offer, especially if that means getting off the beaten trail (we are Backroads after all). Some of our favorite hikes to explore with our guests are Ingólfshöfdi Cape, Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Thingvellir National Park and Gullfoss.
Did you notice how many of the places we’ve listed have “foss” at the end of them? Foss is a suffix and word in Icelandic meaning “waterfall.” Iceland is filled with waterfalls, and we can’t wait to share some of our favorite fossar with you!
Horseback Riding
Ever seen an Icelandic horse? These hardy animals are sure to add another layer of adventure to your trip! They're special because they have 5 gaits—while the rest of the horses in the world have 3. The two extra gaits—called tölt and skeld—are very unique and smooth as silk. These horses are shorter than average and have been used in Iceland for centuries to carry equipment and people around the rocky terrain.
The beloved Icelandic horse is often considered an Icelander's best friend and comrade. They typically have a strong, friendly and curious demeanor, perfect for first-timers and experienced riders alike to enjoy a leisurely ride.
Arctic Rafting
Get to places (and views!) that you can’t reach on foot during an arctic rafting adventure! Throw on a thermal wetsuit and enjoy the crystal clear—and sometimes rapid—waters of Iceland, where you can admire steep canyons and otherworldly rock structures. Super Jeep
When there are places that are hard to reach on foot, we take a car. When there are places that are hard to reach by car, we take a Super Jeep. These remote locations are some of our favorite places in all of Iceland.
Explore the wilds of Thórsmörk (“forest of Thor”). Drive through dense forest and past hidden waterfalls to see the majestic panorama of the Thórsmörk mountain range. On our Iceland Northern Lights Multi-Adventure Tour, we explore all of this and much more.
On our Golden Circle & Volcanic Highlands Multi-Adventure Tour the Super Jeeps will take you to Kerlingarfjöll, a nearly 5,000-foot rust-colored mountain nestled between two glaciers. It’s one of the most stand-out features of Iceland’s central highlands and hard to access without these vehicles.
