Itinerary

Days 1-2 Board a scenic charter flight bound for Akureyri, "Capital of the North" | Iceland's origins of "fire and ice" are evident in the north's wild topography, punctuated by deep fjords and volcanic peaks | Journey past rolling green meadows that unfurl beneath an impressive mountain backdrop along Eyjafjördur, Iceland's longest fjord | Hrisey Island, a bird-watcher's paradise, is the setting for a hike offering 360-degree views of the mainland | Trek along a stunning alpine path with sweeping views of surrounding peaks and Siglufjördur far below.

Days 3-4 Meet a Backroads' longtime local friend who keeps the Icelandic spirit alive with lively tales of fishing in the North Atlantic | Feeling peckish? Now's your chance to try fermented shark, a national dish | Journey to Iceland's most famous whale-watching locale, the pretty village of Húsavík | On foot, explore the Tröllaskagi or "Troll Peninsula," a remarkable area of mountains, lakes, streams and glaciers | Framed by mountains, Lake Botnsvatn offers an idyllic setting for our morning walk | The nutrient-rich waters near Húsavík are an ideal habitat for whales—with luck, we'll spot a cetacean or two on our whale-watching excursion | Soak up the serenity of our hotel's peaceful lakeside location.

Days 5-6 Admire incredible views and discover unique geologic formations—large crater-like depressions formed by ancient lava flows | Set out on a hike from the beautiful and fascinating Grjótagjá Lava Cave | Walk through lava fields for a look at Hverfjall Volcano's caldera | Otherworldly Dimmuborgir (dark fort) greets you with a maze of lava caves, arches, pillars and bridges resembling the ruins of a mysterious castle | Journey across the flanks of Krafla Volcano to Hverir with bubbling mud pots and hissing steam vents | Ready for a heavenly soak in the hot mineral water of Jardbödin pool? It's a fitting finale to an unforgettable week.

The earlier you book, the more choice you'll have and the lower your price. And you can always change your mind — you won't be charged to transfer to a different trip before your final payment is due. View cancellation policy.

Get the Straight Talk about This Trip

We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

Climate & Itinerary Changes

The combination of Iceland's prolific waterfalls, vast icefields, vibrant green landscape and warm ocean currents makes this island like no other place in the world. The island's climate can be as surprising as its terrain, with weather patterns and microclimates that can bring sun, wind, fog, sleet, rain and snow all in the same day (or hour!). Please be sure to bring warm layers and waterproof gear for every day of the trip. In addition, the fluctuating weather might result in flight and mid-trip itinerary changes, but rest assured your Backroads Leaders are always prepared to make necessary adjustments to ensure a great trip while keeping safety the top priority.

Accommodations & Meals

Luxury Iceland style usually means modern, simple and nicely appointed buildings that prioritize location and views over plush amenities or landscaping. Please note that, due to the remoteness of our properties, dinners tend toward a local buffet-style affair and limited-choice menus, which is simply a part of the cultural experience of Iceland.

Why Travel with Backroads in Iceland

Experts with Secrets to Share

In choosing the ideal experts to enrich your travel experience, we look for people with a wealth of local knowledge, but also the ability to convey their insights in English. Too often travelers find themselves smiling politely, not quite understanding what they're being told. Our experts share intriguing facts, anecdotes and inside stories that stay with you forever.

A Variety of Routes Each Day

In Iceland you head off each morning after choosing among several expertly designed routes—all with detailed directions, mileage and shuttle options. Unlike trips with one fixed daily route (or worse, one guide that everyone's obliged to follow), you're free to enjoy the best of the region at your pace, stopping wherever you want to explore further.

A Second Van When You Need It

Backroads is the only active travel company providing two support vans in Iceland—because we know it's essential to ensure a truly great travel experience. It doubles our ability to be there when you need us to offer hydration, lighten your load or give you a lift if it's time to take a break. Read more on why two vans make all the difference.

Everyone at Their Own Pace

We design and support our Iceland trips to suit mixed abilities and varied interests—so you can set your own pace, then change things up as the day unfolds. And all guests are free to do the same, traveling together or apart, with no one cramping anyone else's style. Which sounds easy in theory, but it's hard to pull off. Here's more on how we do it.

We've Set the Standard

For nearly four decades we've worked to earn and maintain our right to call Backroads the world's #1 active travel company. In pursuing that vision on behalf of our guests, we believe we've set the standard for our industry—captured in the Backroads Quality Guide, which clearly sets out the benchmarks of excellence, choice and support that we live by

Our Cultural Roots Run Deep

Thanks to our extensive connections in Iceland, Backroads takes you off the beaten track and deep into the region's culture in ways that traditional travel can never hope to do. We know the people and their customs, the legacy of art and architecture, the complex history and politic—and if we're not sure, our amazing local experts can fill in the blanks.

Kids Who Aren't Kids Anymore

Only Backroads offers active trips in Iceland designed for families with older teens and 20s. These trips are aimed at you and the amazingly grownup members of your clan—whether they're almost high school grads, already in college or further along. Find out more in this blog post.

We Know Where We're Going

Tom Hale has been keeping Backroads on track, with one eye on the horizon, since 1979. His passion for active travel, and for ensuring the highest-quality travel experience, is evident in every detail we add to make a guest's trip unforgettable—and the fact he's right there in the office, making it happen. To hear Tom describe his vision, watch our video.

More Leaders to Support You

On our Iceland trips we have an extra leader supporting you along the trail—for a total of three, compared to the industry standard two. So we can be in more places at once, giving personal attention to guests traveling at their own pace. Here's more on our Trip Leaders.
