Itinerary

Days 1-2 Start your island journey on Maui's southwestern coast | Kayak and snorkel in the pristine waters of the Pacific, looking for dolphins, sea turtles and colorful schools of fish | Lounge by the pool or enjoy the beach at our magnificent oceanfront resort | Hike across the majestic Haleakala Crater and the summit of the highest point on Maui.

Day 3 Adults hike the Waihee Ridge Trail in the West Maui Mountains, one of Maui's best-kept secrets | Take in 360-degree views of the Pacific, Wailuku and Haleakala from Lanilili (Small Heaven) Peak | Kids catch some waves in a beginner's surf lesson | Visit Lahaina, a charming island town with great shops and restaurants | From December to March, watch for humpback whales on our private boat to Lanai—the smallest inhabited island in Hawaii—where red-lava cliffs and magnificent coastal trails await | Options abound at our hotel: swim or snorkel at Hulopoe Beach or luxuriate poolside.

Days 4-5 Walk on the blissful Koloiki Ridge Trail amid guava, ironwood and eucalyptus trees as you enjoy panoramic vistas of Maui, Molokai and the Pacific Ocean | Delve into the natural world, ancient traditions and plantation-era history at the Lanai Culture & Heritage Center | Kids learn the hula or make their own fresh-flower leis | Go for a scenic coastal walk along an old fisherman's trail.

Get the Straight Talk about This Trip

We want to make sure you're on the right trip and that you have the best experience possible. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

Easygoing Adventure

This is a Level 1-3 trip, meaning the activities are easygoing and designed to allow us to take it slow and soak up the beauty of the region. Each day we embark on an active adventure, but the amount of time spent in the saddle and on the trails is less than the typical Backroads trip. We've paired our core activities with ones that are suited to this destination, such as kayaking and snorkeling. The level of these activities combined with plenty of downtime to relax and take advantage of the hotels, result in the ideal way to experience the Hawaiian Islands.

Shuttling

We often shuttle to access a variety of fun activities and local highlights. The Trip Leaders will be able to help you determine which shuttles you can opt out of if you are more inclined to stay at the hotel and reconvene with the group after a day of relaxation.

Resorts

We've chosen to stay at large beach resorts on this trip because they are the most luxurious in the area and offer an array of amenities and activities to enjoy.

Peak Season

The holiday and spring break months are a great time to travel; however, with days off and the desire to escape for sunshine many others have the same idea. While we always aim to get off the beaten path, during certain times of the year crowds and delays are unavoidable.
